Job description:

The UK's unique and historic capability in nuclear is being applied to innovative projects with the potential to support work across the UK's national strategic agenda.

These projects help to maintain and grow valuable, and previously declining, nuclear skills and encourage investment in capabilities which directly strengthen the UK's wider nuclear portfolio.

The post holder will also have the opportunity to support policy development on matters such as, bridging the capability gaps in the UK's nuclear sector, the role of the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), the UK's nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear's role in medicine.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in working on a high profile and cross-cutting policy area.

Our team, Nuclear Infrastructure, Capability & International (NICI), is part of the Nuclear Power, Infrastructure and Decommissioning Directorate in the Nuclear Cluster in DESNZ.

We hold sponsorship of the National Nuclear Laboratory and are leading policy in Fuel Supply, Strategic Capability, Innovation, Civil-Defence Collaboration, and International Engagement.

We are a friendly and welcoming team, who are supportive of learning and development opportunities, with colleagues currently based in London, Salford, and Cardiff.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will initially be responsible for acting as the interface across government and arm's length bodies, to coordinate government interests in nuclear/space related projects and informing future policy direction.

Responsibilities will include:

Providing a sector interface between departments, arm's length bodies and the nuclear and space sectors - Identifying cross-cutting needs, opportunities or risks, ensuring appropriate nuclear input (technical and sector breadth) into relevant projects and ensuring coordinated messaging between Departments e.g., around funding announcements.

Capability Development - Considering nuclear for space in line with the wider capability development benefits it supports (e.g., skills growth) and identifying opportunities for collaboration.

Nuclear representative - Using sector knowledge to influence discussions around nuclear technologies in space and identifying cross-sector opportunities, while being mindful of the interactions with other government policies.
