Background
The NIO represents Northern Ireland interests at a UK Government level and UK Government interests in Northern Ireland.
We have a wide range of responsibilities, including:
underpinning political stability in Northern Ireland; overseeing the Northern Ireland devolution settlement; leading on national security policy in Northern Ireland; addressing the legacy of Northern Ireland's past; delivering elections and constitutional reform in Northern Ireland; playing a key role in rebalancing the NI economy; representing NI interests, including on the border with Ireland, now that the UK has left the EU.

The NIO's Prosperity Group are recruiting for a Grade 6 to join a dynamic and fast-paced team, working on a varied policy portfolio to develop and implement the UK Government's economic priorities in Northern Ireland.
The Prosperity Group's role is to work with other Whitehall departments and the Northern Ireland Executive to strengthen the Northern Ireland economy, boost innovation, drive investment, and to promote Northern Ireland as a great place to do business.
It is responsible for the post EU Exit arrangements in Northern Ireland including the Windsor Framework and Retained EU Law, and for work to make the Northern Ireland public finances more sustainable in the ongoing absence of a Northern Ireland Executive.
Our work also contributes to the UK Government's levelling up agenda.The Prosperity Group is led by a Deputy Director and consists of three Grade 6 led units:
the Public Finances Unit, the Economic Growth Unit and Chief Economist Unit.
- This role would lead the Economic Growth Unit which consists of three Band A/Grade 7 staff and a further 6 staff at Band B-C/SEO-HEO. There are opportunities to work across the Group, supporting ministerial priorities.
- The Economic Growth and Strategy Unit supports the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in making the best use of the range of spending levers at their disposal to achieve the UK Government's strategic objectives in Northern Ireland, to deliver economic growth, and deliver NIOled funds including the New Deal for Northern Ireland and New Decade, New Approach (NDNA) agreements.
Key areas of work include:
- Strategic leadership of how UKG can support and drive growth in Northern Ireland;
- The allocation and delivery of New Deal for Northern Ireland and NDNA unique circumstances funding;
- Working with DLUHC on the assessment of Northern Ireland bids for UKwide funds, including the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Levelling Up Fund and Community Ownership Fund;
- Developing an economic strategy and supply side interventions for Northern Ireland;
