We are excited to announce three brand-new opportunities within our Criminal Justice team as a Mental Health Recovery Worker


Due to new funding and the development of our Criminal Justice services, Together EDP and Torbay Recovery Initiatives, will now be able to provide support for individuals with low level mental health issues who find themselves within the Criminal Justice system.


As a Mental Health Recovery Worker, you will be working with individuals involved in the Criminal Justice system who are experiencing either mental ill-health or a combination of mental ill-health combined with substance misuse issues.

Your focus in this role will be to provide support for the mental health treatment requirements and you will be signing posting to Criminal Justice Recovery Workers for any substance misuse support.


You will be responsible for a caseload of service users and will be providing a range of support such as recovery planning, delivering mental health interventions (1:1 and group) and promoting digital interventions.


Day to day duties of a Mental Health Recovery Worker include:

  • Delivering evidence based mental health interventions, building on people's strengths and sources of support
  • Participating in joint assessments, joint delivery and information sharing with other services across Devon and Torbay, such as Young People, Housing, Criminal Justice and DSVA.
  • Provide reports to assist the Court and attend Court as required.
  • Conducting risk assessment and risk management planning in consultation with colleagues and partners.

Opportunities Available:


We currently have three positions available; details of the positions are as follows:1x Full Time, 35 hours per week, based in Exeter.

1x Full Time, 35 hours per week, based in Newton Abbot, covering Torbay also.

1x Part Time, 17.5 hours per week, based in Barnstaple.

All the roles will start on an initial fixed term / secondment basis until 31/03/2025.

There will be an element of travel between hubs, Courts and partnership sites. Mileage is fully paid for travel between locations.

Who we're looking for:

We're looking for Recovery Workers with a real passion for working in a recovery focused environment.

Ideally, you will have some experience working in a similar sector, such as substance misuse, mental health support, or health and social care.


In addition, you will also have:

  • Experience working with people with mental health treatment needs, their families and other carers
  • A knowledge and understanding of the harmful effects associated with mental health treatment needs in relation to health, offending, social welfare, housing and personal relationships
  • Knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system, including the National Probation Service, CRCs, Courts, Police and Prisons.
  • Experience of managing, planning, and prioritising your own workload, delivering work of a high standard
  • An understanding of safeguarding
  • An understanding of group working, group dynamics and group facilitation
  • Excellent communication, organisation and time management skills
  • The ability to work well in a team environment alongside a range of people and organisations
  • You'll be keen to develop professionally and, just as importantly, will have a genuine interest in the understanding of mental health, substance misuse problems and a positive recovery focused attitude.
