We have a unique and exciting opportunity for 3 Apprentices to join us on a 18 Month fixed term basis in the Train Planning Team as we look to build future talent in this critical operational side of our business.


This is an Apprenticeship role which provides scope for development across the disciplines of Network Development & Planning, Operations, and the wider AWC business.


Completing the Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship, as approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, whilst in this role will provide transferable knowledge, skills and behaviours for multiple functions within the Train Planning Team.


The post-holders will initially be given the opportunity to experience first-hand the various departments, organisations and industry partners involved planning our train services.


After initial induction, they will support the Network Development & Planning team across activities such as engineering access planning, timetable development, train planning and traincrew diagramming whilst gaining new skills, knowledge and experience.


Key Accountabilities:


  • To gain an appreciation of the roles and responsibilities of the Planning team and the role train planning plays in AWC service delivery.
  • To develop and support the team with a programme of activities including:
  • Developing an understanding and basic competency in key train planning disciplines, including timing and unit diagramming.
  • Developing an understanding and basic competency in traincrew diagramming, supporting the STP Traincrew Diagramming Manager as required.
  • Assisting the Engineering Access Planning Manager with managing the Engineering Access Process, and identifying operational impacts.
  • Development of Rail Replacement plans for key engineering works, evaluating these based on demand and reservations data, and engaging with suppliers, managing invoicing and cost management.
  • Build knowledge and appreciation of Track Access and Network Change processes, including the Schedule 4 compensation regime, attending industry meetings as required alongside other colleagues to grow understanding.
  • Coordinating wider communication and business briefings on timetable changes, amendments and engineering work.
  • Continue to identify areas for improvement and greater efficiency in how we work, including through supporting development of processes to enhance quality of plans, and enabling reuse of adaptation of previous train plans for future scenarios
