    Job summary

    The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is excited to expandits Band 6 workforce for the Urgent Treatment Centre at Pontefract GeneralInfirmary.

    We provide GP and Nurse led care 7 days a week includingnights and bank holidays covering minor illness and injuries to both adults andpaediatric patients.

    We are looking to appoint highly motivated, flexible Nurseswith Accident and Emergency experience to join our busy established UrgentTreatment Centre who have a passion for delivering safe, high-quality care topatients in an acute setting.

    A commitment to continuous professional development for bothyourself and the team is essential, as this will ensure that our team has therequired skills and knowledge to deliver safe and effective care.

    Main duties of the job

    Manage the department environment, and beresponsible for ensuring co-ordination and delivery of skilled, effective careand safe, timely discharge.

    Assess,prioritise, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care. Superviseothers in the aforementioned functions.

    Ensuresafe, timely discharge or transfer, of patient, to wards, other hospitalsor care settings.

    Performand ensure others perform patient observations such as blood pressure, pulse,respirations, oxygen saturations, early warning score, pain score, pressurescore, peak expiratory flow, temperatures, and electrocardiographs.

    Providefollow up advice, treatment and care.

    Performprocedures such as wound closure (by suturing, tapes or medical glue), wound care, Catheterisations, trephine nails, venepuncture, and intravenous cannulation.

    CompleteInvestigations such as blood glucose measurement, ward test urine, blood gasanalysis, pregnancy testing .

    Key Responsibilities

    KEY DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES

    CLINICAL

  • Performprocedures such as wound closure (by suturing, tapes or medical glue), localanaesthetics, wound care, incision and drainage of small abscesses, nailremoval, urinary catheterisations, trephine nails, venepuncture, and intravenous cannulation.
  • CompleteInvestigations such as blood glucose measurement, ward test urine, blood gasanalysis, pregnancy testing .
  • Referpatients to other speciality doctors for an opinion or advice orthopaedic;surgical, mental health, plastics.
  • Usecurrent Emergency Department Patient Group Directions (Mid Yorkshire) to supplyand administer medicines to patients without reference to a doctor.
  • Recognise and advise on Child Protection issuesand follow the Child Protection Policy, informing the appropriate professionalsand parents/carers of concerns and procedure.
  • Recognise and advise on Vulnerable Adult Abuseprotection issues and follow the Kirklees Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy,informing the appropriate professionals and parents/carers of concerns andprocedure as per Mid-Yorkshire Trust policy
  • NurseLeader/participant for the Major Trauma Team
  • Initiateand participate in Advanced Life Support and cardiac arrest management.
  • Maintainclear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in patients notesproviding a record of care delivered. Remind other members of the team to dolikewise..
  • Assesspatients (triage) - requesting x-rays and supplying and administeringanalgesia, as needed, using Patient Group Directions. Refer, after nurseassessment, patients to other health care professionals such as mental healthteam, dental services, General Practitioners.
  • Acton results of those x-rays and investigations requested by self.
  • Administerintra venous, intra muscular, subcutaneous injections, and rectal and oralmedication.
  • Applicationof bandages casts and splints.
  • Providedirect patient care. Attending to patients hygiene needs such as giving andremoving bedpans and urinals. Washing incontinent, unclean and infestedpatients as required.
  • Give direction, support and advice to juniorstaff
  • Acceptaccountability and responsibility for own safe clinical practice. Comply withthe NMC Code of Practice and subsequent published guidelines for practice.
  • Actas the patients advocate when necessary.
  • Attend the department and assume nurseleadership (in absence of Matron and Senior Sister) in the event of a majorincident being declared
  • Implement and maintain control of infectionprocedures, such as hand washing, and be attentive that others do so
  • Movepatients on trolleys to other area, such as x-ray; resuscitation room .

    Experience

    Essential

  • Sufficient or significant proven experience in Accident and Emergency/critical care
  • A&E
  • Evidence of participating in the development of patient care
  • Desirable

  • Have experience working in a Urgent Treatment Center, Minor Injury, Walk in Center
  • Immediate Life Support

  • Trauma Nursing Course
  • Advanced Life Support

  • Undertaken added responsibilities as a Senior Staff Nurse such as moving and handling; wound care teaching; liaison role

  • Have or undertaking education with the intention of completing Health related degree
