Are you passionate about providing care to women and their families? We have an the opportunity for MSW's to join our postnatal ward or community.


  • To work as a member of the maternity team, supporting the midwifery staff and assisting the care needs of women and their babies
  • To provide support and guidance to junior colleagues
  • Be able to work in a flexible manner regarding hospital/community placement and shift patterns depending on the needs of the service
  • Will contribute to ongoing assessment and recognise when it is necessary to refer to others for reassessment or for expert help and advice
Following completion of a competency framework, conduct clinical skills below independently under the indirect supervision of a registered practitioner.

You will be paid Band 2 until completion of competency framework.


In addition to the roles and responsibilities of a Maternity Healthcare Assistant (MHCA Band 2) a MSW, Band 3, may undertake the following tasks(also under the indirect supervision of a registered practitioner).

Support of the mother and birthing partner

  • Obtain capillary sample of maternal blood for glucose analysis
  • Cannulation
  • Perform Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Process fetal scalp/umbilical pH
  • Assist mothers with postnatal exercises
  • Inform parents about the benefits of breastfeeding
  • Position and comfort of breastfeeding women including the position and attachment of the baby
  • Support women with hand expression of breast milk.
  • Assist women to use breast pumps
  • Support mothers to cup feed
  • Support women with their choice of infant feeding
  • Discuss changing stool and micturition of normal neonate.
  • Trained in Venepuncture
Care of baby

  • Assist midwife with neonatal resuscitation (collecting and/or passing equipment).
  • Describe, undertake, document vital signs of the normal neonate: temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and oxygen saturation and where appropriate, escalate to a midwife.
  • Daily baby checks
  • Following initial assessment by a midwife and their development of a care plan, undertake routine healthy baby observations in the hospital and community reporting any abnormalities to the midwife.
  • Obtain capillary sample of blood via heel prick.
  • Perform day 5 neonatal examination and Newborn blood spot
