£45,585 to £54,395 per annum

The Role


This full-time role sits within the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences (BNS), part of our Faculty of Medical Sciences who deliver world leading innovation and excellence in teaching and research.


You will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of academics and researchers at an exciting time of expansion of nutrition and dietetic undergraduate teaching and nutrition research at Newcastle University.

Our programmes include BSc Human Nutrition, BSc Nutrition with Food Marketing, MDiet (Hons) Dietetics, and, in 2024, the launch of our new BSc/ MSci Nutrition and Exercise Science.


The University has developed an Academic Job Summary Guidance document which summarises the range of activities that academic staff may be expected to perform.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design and deliver high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities as part of a team. This should be carried out within external, professional or accreditation requirements
  • Set, mark and assess course work and examinations, providing timely and effective feedback to students
  • Ensure that current research, scholarship and evaluation is informing teaching and assessment practice
  • Supervise undergraduate and/or postgraduate research projects in nutrition and dietetics and related disciplines
  • Provide timely mentoring, academic guidance and pastoral support to students to enhance their learning experience
  • Undertake administrative duties related to the degree programmes and modules as appropriate to role
  • Engage in research activities, teaching innovation and/or other professional activities for the benefit of the University and the discipline
The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge, ability and expertise to teach nutrition and food science related topics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and contribute to supervision up to and including Doctoral level
  • Awareness of current issues and trends in nutrition/ food science and technology/ food microbiology
  • A high level of interpersonal and communication skills, showing ability to effectively communicate complex information, in writing and verbally with students, academic and external audiences
  • Experience of developing teaching materials in the area of nutrition/ food science and technology/ food microbiology
  • Ability to contribute to administrative processes for the successful management of the degree programmes
  • Experience of working independently, and cohesively within a team, and contributing enthusiastically to the team goals
  • Experience of providing pastoral support to students
  • Ability and willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries, and to work collaboratively with colleagues from other Schools and with strategic partners nationally and internationally
  • A good quality publication record for the discipline, with peer reviewed publications at international level
Desirable

  • Experience of supervising student research projects in the area
  • Experience of coordinating and leading modules or courses in higher education
  • Proven ability of securing appropriate funding from relevant sources and consistent with discipline norms to support activities

Qualifications:


  • First Degree in relevant discipline
  • PhD in relevant discipline
Desirable

  • Registration with the Association for Nutrition or Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) membership
  • Recognised Postgraduate teaching qualification/ Advance HE Fellowship accreditation or equivalent
  • Basic Food Hygiene certificate
