Maintenance Assistant


This is a varied role and the successful applicant will be able to work under his or her own initiative as well as working as part of a team.

The remit of this challenging role is to carry out routine maintenance; repair and fault-finding work on rail vehicles, plant, lifting and handling equipment, buildings and facilities as required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Routine rail vehicle maintenance as per the Vehicle Maintenance Instruction (VMI)
  • Operation of powered equipment, lifting and mechanical handling equipment
  • Assist Technicians as required
  • Act as Person in Charge of Moves (PICOM)
  • On site rail vehicle driving
  • Where trained and competent move Class 22X, 180 and 185 vehicles around the Crofton Depot site.
  • Maintenance of plant.
  • Compliance with all laid down H&S legislation and depot procedures to ensure a safe accident free environment.
  • Responsible for keeping the work area clean and tidy and to the highest standard at all times.
  • Required to continually look at opportunities to adopt and develop continuous improvement techniques. Knowledge and experience

Requirements & skills

  • Fully literate and numerate, and preferably computer literate.
  • Detailed understanding of Class 180 and Class 22X vehicles.
  • Competent to undertake Safety Critical Work.


  • Where appropriate

  • Trained & Competent to Drive Class 22x, 180 and 185 vehicles.
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS)
  • Designated Person (where appropriate)
  • This position involves shift working which includes nights and weekends
