Trowers & Hamlins is a City-led, international and national law firm with over 160 partners and 950 staff. With offices across the UK, Middle East and Asia, we provide a full-service integrated offering.

Our clients operate in diverse industry sectors such as construction, transport and infrastructure, banking and financial services, distribution and logistics, education and health, hotels and leisure, defence, engineering and surveying, charities, retail and energy and natural resources.

We also act for many high net worth individuals.

We are different and we believe it is our people that make us unique. We expect and respect that you and your talents are too. The truth is we don't prescribe who you are or how you ought to be. It's what you can do that interests us most.

While the work on offer is rewarding and often complex, the qualities we look for are simple. The ability to get on with people from all walks of life, for example. To talk and to listen. To develop the sorts of relationships that mean you win the friendship and loyalty of clients and colleagues alike. In short, to connect. These are the characteristics our people all have in common. They are vital, as is the drive and imagination to use your unique talents to the full. We will help you in this. In fact, we will support you in every way we can.

The opportunity
We are currently looking for an experienced Associate to join our Planning and Environmental team. The planning and environmental team undertakes a huge variety of both contentious and non-contentious matters.

The team works nationally out of four UK offices in Manchester, London, Birmingham and Exeter, so while we work flexibly both remotely and between the physical offices, and support clients and projects throughout the country, the health and safety lead partner is based in Manchester.

What you'll be doing

  • Advising social housing and privatesector landlords on statutory compliance and contractual obligations across a range of risks including fire safety, asbestos, legionella, mould, electrical and gas safety;
  • Inputting into H&S policies and procedures as well as helping out with crisis management following an accident, incident or near miss;
  • Advising on insurance cover for legal liabilities and legal expenses;
  • Managing statutory notices, interviews under caution, regulatory investigations and prosecutions;
  • Defending and mitigating criminal prosecutions where something has gone wrong, and providing support where risks entail potential reputational damage and public relations issues;
  • Representing clients at inquests and providing support on preparation for appearing in the Coroner's Court;
  • Advising on contaminated land which poses human health risks and potential claims risks for landlords and freeholders;
  • Advising numerous landlords, developers, contractors and consultants within the Built Environment sector on all aspects of the Building Safety legislation; and
  • Providing support with health, safety and environmental due diligence on real estate, commercial and corporate transactions

The purpose of this role is to work as part of the team to support the partner in Manchester and also work across all offices in developing the firm's health & safety practice.

Any environmental law or general regulatory experience would also be useful.

The role would also involve:

  • Building and maintaining effective client relationships;
  • Active participation in marketing initiatives, including client training sessions;
  • Evidencing behaviour that is supportive of the Firm's diverse and inclusive culture;
  • Ensuring files are managed in compliance with Lexcel procedures;
  • Participating in firmwide and departmental training sessions; and
  • Training and development of junior legal staff.

What you'll need

The firm has a Career Development Framework which sets out the competencies we expect of those at the Associate/Senior Associate grade.

In particular for this role we require:

  • Qualified solicitor with at least 38 years' PQE in Health and Safety work
  • Drive, enthusiasm and a 'can do' attitude;
  • Strong client focus and a commitment to service delivery;
  • Commercial awareness;
  • Credibility;
  • Good team player and ability to work flexibly;

  • Solid academic record;
  • Methodical, disciplined and organised approach
