Atkins is seeking a talented Managing Consultant to join our Rail Operations and Performance team, within our Transport Consultancy & Advisory practice, based in our offices (Derby/Manchester/London), although hybrid working (i.e.

a combination of office-based and home-based working) will also be considered.

We are looking to grow the size of the team to cater for a substantial forward workload on numerous high-profile projects,including timetable development, assessment and rail performance simulation.

You will be managing a small team of rail modellers and timetable planners to deliver on this workload.

You will be expected to undertake business development, bid writing, leading technical evaluation and key work streams to analyse capacity and develop timetables to support major rail infrastructure schemes and service enhancements.

You will also be expected to review and critique rail modelling projects to ensure high quality work through the end-to-end delivery process, ensuring that client expectations are exceeded wherever possible, and that processes are optimised and improved over time.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled person with the following attributes:


Core Role Accountabilities:


Essential:


  • Detailed knowledge of the GB rail network including its structure and the interfaces between organisations and industry bodies, geography, systems and operations.
  • Experience within either a Network Rail or Train/Freight Operator train planning team and the ability to demonstrate an indepth knowledge of timetable development and the relevant timetable development processes.
  • Experience of using timetabling software such as ATTUne and / or TPS.
  • An understanding of the basics of track layout design along with signalling principles.
  • Detailed working knowledge of the principles of Timetable Planning Rules and the ability to construct timetables.
  • Ability to review and evaluate rail modelling output, e.g. RailSys/Open Track/TREsim.
  • Knowledge and experience of business development, work winning and bid writing.
  • An ability to take ownership for key workstreams and/or overall project delivery.
  • Clientfocused, with a clear understanding of how to produce technical outputs for a range of audiences.
  • The ability to engage confidently with technical specialists within the rail industry (e.g. the Department for Transport, Network Rail, Train Operating Companies, etc.).
  • Supervise the governance of portfolios of projects of varying complexity, to ensure risk is appropriately mitigated and compliance to required corporate and client requirements.
  • Good organisational and timemanagement skills to produce personal and teambased outputs within time and budget constraints.
  • Excellent analytical, numeracy and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
  • Enthusiasm, energy and flexibility to work across a number of projects within a fastpaced consultancy environment.

Desirable:


  • Experience of using rail modelling software like RailSys or an alternative market leading rail simulation tool (e.g. Opentrack, TREsim).
  • Experience of leading a small team and strong people management skills.
  • The ability to review, analyse and manipulate large data sets and text files, with experience of computer programming using VBA, Perl, C# or a similar software package.
  • A higher qualification in a transport related discipline.
  • Knowledge of and / or hands on experience of rolling stock diagramming and train crew diagramming and rostering.
  • Knowledge and experience in project management.
