    Job summary

    This suitable for a registrar who is interested in acquiring further sub-specialist experience in Head and Neck surgery. This is an ideal developmental opportunity for someone looking to further their experience and gain sub-specialist skills prior to applying for a Consultant post in Head and Neck surgery.

    Charing Cross Hospital is a major Tertiary Referral Centre for Head and Neck Oncology and Skull Base Surgery and is the National Centre for Adult Airway Reconstruction. This post will allow the successful candidate to further their knowledge and experience in Head and Neck Oncological surgery, benign Head and Neck Surgery and Adult Laryngology. There will be opportunity to develop clinical and operative skills in major complex cancer resection and reconstruction, skull base surgery, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and endoscopic techniques and sufficient time will be available to carry out research in Head and Neck cancer. An intercollegiate examination, or equivalent, in the relevant speciality and previous Head and Neck surgery experience are essential. The successful post holder will receive Consultant-led education and supervision and will be supported in their professional development as a Head and Neck surgeon and will be expected to be fully registered with a Licence to Practise from the General Medical Council.

    Main duties of the job

    This post holder will be expected to work as a member of the Head and Neck Cancer multidisciplinary team. This will involve providing outpatient care and both inpatient and day surgery diagnostic and surgical treatment services. The post is based primarily at Charing Cross campus with some clinics at the St Mary's site and will be for a 12-month fixed period commencing October 2023.

    The role offers a well-balanced exposure to all aspects of head and neck cancer extirpative surgery and benign tumour surgery. Input into the academic activity of the department is encouraged. There will also be an important service provision component with both operating lists and outpatient clinics, as well as the middle tier on-call rota (approximate on-call frequency for ENT-in-general, 1:7)

    Job responsibilities

    The successful applicant will take on the role of Head & Neck Registrar based at Charing Cross Hospital. This will involving diagnosing and managing patients with benign and malignant head and neck conditions, making treatment decisions, presenting cases at the multidisciplinary meetings and performing head and neck surgery both under supervision and independently. In addition, the registrar will lead the inpatient team in managing post-operative inpatients and coordinate operating lists. The post has an important educational role with teaching session for the junior medical staff, nursing staff and allied health professionals. Involvement in research and audit is encouraged and the registrar will be expected to aim take on such projects with a view to publication. The timetable will be agreed weekly with the ENT team and will be guided by clinical, training and waiting list pressures. It will naturally include day surgery, inpatient and outpatient sessions, with a total of around 7 fixed sessions a week.

    Regular meetings: Head and Neck and Airway MDTs, weekly departmental academic meetings, monthly operational meeting, ad hoc meetings.

    On call - This post includes an on call commitment for the Imperial sites (Charing Cross, St Marys and Hammersmith) as well as Chelsea and Westminster trust and the Royal Brompton. The middle tier out of hours on-call rota (approximate on-call frequency for ENT-in-general, 1:7) and the Registrar of the Week rota, providing site cover and emergency support from 9am-5pm.

  • On GMC registered/ licensed Medical Practitioner
  • FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent On GMC's specialist
  • Register or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register Within 6 months of CCT in Otolaryngology, Maxillofacial Surgery or Plastic Surgery
  • Desirable

  • MSc
  • Clinical Skills

  • Commensurate with ST3+ ENT, Maxillofacial or Plastic surgery training
