Band 4 Stroke Therapy Technical Instructor


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Senior Therapy Technical Instructor to join our Inpatient Stroke Therapy Team at Northampton General Hospital.

We are a dynamic team that is part of a very successful stroke pathway that covers the whole of Northamptonshire.


Applicants should have experience and desire to expand their knowledge of stroke / neurological conditions and how therapy supports this population.

Applicants should display an understanding of neurological assessment, treatment techniques and therapeutic handling of stroke patients.

In order to continue the post holders' development there is well-established stroke specific training available via a variety of methods and many other opportunities for CPD are available such as attending specialist MDT meetings or spending time with MDT members to gain new skills.


The applicant will be expected to work in our 7-day service across the trust assessing and treating stroke patients, which can be anywhere from A and E to ITU.

The applicant will work in both the hyperacute and inpatient rehabilitation setting.

We work closely with our Community Stroke Team and the successful applicant will need to have excellent communication skills to provide seamless transfer of care into the community.


Applicants will be expected to participate in audit projects and be innovative in service development to maintain standards and meeting national guidelines.

They must also demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting the training of colleagues and MDT members.


The post holder will:

Actively provide therapy care for patients as part of the multi-disciplinary team at NGH.

Provide specific evidence-based assessments and treatments under the indirect supervision of registered therapists using a therapy framework.

Work with stroke survivors within the hospital.


Have access to read and understand medical notes and information from the MDT to inform decision making regarding suitability for interventions.

Provide therapy care to in-patients and occasionally patients in their own homes.

Represent Therapies at appropriate family meetings.

Provide effective input into the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision.

Actively involved in departmental developments and governance.

Patient care:


To be an integral member of a therapies team, to assist registered therapy staff in assessing and carrying out specific therapy interventions for clients with more complex needs.

This will include clients who have difficulties understanding and communicating.


Review and implement treatment programmes making necessary modifications prior to reporting back to a registered therapist in line with the Band 4 competency framework.

Provide support and training to other registered and non-registered staff within the therapy team.


Manage and prioritise own case load independently, carry out delegated duties and work flexibly and at a fast pace to support the smooth running of the therapy department.


Provision of clinical services:


Demonstrate a good understanding of stroke within the area of speciality / clinical pathway and the impact resulting impairments may have on a patients' function and rehabilitation.


To have a holistic understanding of the patient and their condition, as well as the impact of psychosocial dynamics on their function.


To enable patients to engage in their rehabilitation programme using encouragement, reassurance, tact, and sensitivity; overcome barriers to understanding with patients whose understanding is impaired.

To identify and implement correct treatment plans within known patient care pathways
