We are currently looking for a Senior Assistant Scientist to work within National Monitoring - Monitoring Laboratories based at Starcross.

The Starcross Laboratory provides analysis of environmental samples to support the Environment Agency's regulatory responsibilities using a wide range of analytical techniques.

As a Senior Assistant Scientist in the Starcross Organics Team, you will be required to supervise the day-to-day activities of the Assistant Scientists within in the team, monitor and prioritise workload and provide training for both new and existing members of the team.

You will also have opportunity to use your technical knowledge and trouble-shooting skills by supporting the section Scientists in a variety of tasks form investigating routine instrument issues to implementing improvements to analytical methods.

You will play a key role in the maintenance of our internal quality systems, including maintaining documentation, monitoring method Bias/RSD performance and carrying out non-conforming work investigations in line with our ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

You will actively promote health, safety and wellbeing ensuring provision of safe working practices in line with Environment Agency guidance

  • The team
  • You will be part of the National Monitoring
  • Monitoring Laboratories, providing analytical services to both the Environment Agency and a variety of external customers. You will be based at Starcross laboratory as a member of the Organic Chemistry Team. The team currently consists of 24 staff members, analysing environmental water samples using a variety of techniques.
As well as routine analysis the section is also required to provide bespoke methods depending on EA requirements.

  • Experience/skills required
  • Ideally you will be educated to degree level or equivalent and/or have proven experience of working in a laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025.
You should have a thorough understanding of the analytical techniques involved in the analysis of environmental samples.

You must enjoy working in a busy, fast paced team environment, often under pressure to achieve results against many conflicting priorities.

You must be confident in using a risk-based approach to make sometimes quick decisions, often without the input of your Scientist or Team Leader.
