  • Job description

  • We are looking for a highly motivated Asset Performance Team Leader to join the Thames Tidal Defence Leadership team on a fixed term contract, providing cover on assignment until January 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who would like to gain Management experience at a strategically important asset.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working as part of the TTD Leadership team you will lead and support on Asset Management and planning at Thames Barrier & Associated Gates to ensure their continued reliability and operation.
  • Work as part of Thames Estuary Asset Management (TEAM Integrated Delivery Team) to support the delivery of capital/revenue programmes including input into the next 10 year delivery vehicle.
  • Manage the assets drawing and records management systems to ensure accuracy of information at all times.
  • Work closely with Thames Barrier Engineering Department and other teams at Thames Barrier to ensure asset management objectives are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Work with partners within I-STORM (International network of storm surge barriers) to utilise knowledge and best practice.
  • Manage effectiveness and wellbeing of a team that leads and delivers on a wide range of challenging asset management activities.
  • Manage health, safety, and wellbeing in line with Environment Agency policy
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • The Thames Barrier is one of the largest moveable flood defence barriers in the world and the teams who work here protect London from tidal flooding. The team is responsible for Asset Management, Data & Information Management, Business Planning and Facilities at the Thames Barrier & Associated Gates. The team consists of engineers, planners, project managers and data analysts working together to maintain and improve flood defences in the Thames Estuary.
  • Experience/skills required
  • Confident and visible leadership with the ability to show initiative
  • Ability to develop and motivate others to deliver positive outcomes in line with team objectives
  • Ability to build effective relationships. Work closely with internal / external partners
  • Experience and confidence working with health, safety and wellbeing procedures.
  • Capable of prioritising and handling complex workloads that involves riskbased decision making
  • Excellent organisational skills / ability to work to multiple deadlines
  • Incident response activities with an ability to input into and solve complex problems;

Would be useful:

  • People management experience
  • Experience Managing budgets
  • Qualification or relevant work experience in Flood & Coastal Risk Management, Asset Management, Engineering or Data Management would be useful but not essential
