- To act as an autonomous practitioner, making critical clinical decisions independently when diagnosing, monitoring and managing patients with an MUO/CUP/NSS; supporting the Acute Oncology nursing team.
- To independently prescribe and request additional diagnostics to improve and support patient pathway, reducing unnecessary delays.
- The post holder will extend clinical practice and standards of care within the MUO/CUP/NSS and acute oncology service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute to service improvement in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Participate and contribute to the MDT for CUP/MUO/NSS and ensure the patients are referred to relevant pathway to reduce delays.
- To improve outcomes for patients by improving cancer services and quality of cancer care. Radiology may report incidental findings to the CUP/MUO/NSS lead to redirect to the relevant MDT.
- To act as a resource for junior doctors and registered nurses requiring specialist support.
- To act as a resource for patients requiring specialist support, particularly for patients who have no site specific nurse specialist.
- To act as an interface between medical practitioners, nursing staff, the multidisciplinary team, patients and carers
- To support medical staff in the management of patients with a known or suspected malignant diagnosis.
- NMC Registered First level Nurse/AHP
- Advanced Physical Health assessment level 7
- Non-medical prescribing or working towards.
- Specialist Oncology / Haematology course or evidence of relevant clinical experience.
- Advanced Clinical Practice MSc/PGDip/PGCert or willingness to work towards.
- Teaching certificate or equivalent (or working towards)
- Experience with time management skills responding to and prioritising work as necessary
- Experience with service development / improvement
- Experience of attending relevant local, Network, National meetings/ forums relevant to oncology / CUP / MUO /Haematology/ AOS
- Extensive post registration experience in the NHS
- Proven experience working at band 7 within an Oncology / Haematology area or able to demonstrate transferrable skills
- Advanced knowledge of anticancer treatments
- Advanced communication skills where the topics may be highly sensitive and complex in nature
- Knowledge and experience of developing, implementing and reviewing policy and guidance.

Job summary
An exciting opportunity for an ACP to join our AOS team in cancer services. The successful candidate will provide day to day leadership in the delivery of cancer services across the organisation, exercising advanced clinical skills, levels of judgement, discretion and decision-making in specifically CUP/MUO, demonstrated through, and supported by, professional portfolio evidence.
The advanced clinical practitioner is the named key worker and point of contact through the CUP/MUO pathway, supporting patients through their journey to ensure they get the right diagnostics at the right time to prevent delays. We are also currently trialling the NSS pathway within this service. The ACP is supported by an Oncologist specific to CUP/MUO and NSS. The Acute Oncology team work closely with the ACP and support in all areas of the pathway together.
The role requires considerable tenacity and autonomous thinking to ensure that the right escalations, clinical actions and advice is made to ensure that the patient pathway to treatment is not subject to unnecessary delays.
