    Description


    CK Group is looking for a highly motivated Laboratory Automation Lead to join a top biotechnological company in Newcastle and play a key role in transforming and eventually leading laboratory operations.

    Company:

    A newly established biotechnology firm dedicated to constructing a biological and digital platform for biological assets. It boasts cutting-edge microbial engineering facilities, including advanced automation equipment that the successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and optimizing to drive internal R&D initiatives forward.

    The Role:
    • Develop and optimize automated protocols for various life sciences laboratory processes using state-of-the-art automation tools like liquid handling robots, colony pickers, DNA sequencers, flow cytometry, digitally controlled bioreactors, and microscopy, among others.
    • Program and maintain automation software and equipment for activities in engineering biology, synthetic biology, microbiology, and molecular biology.
    • Engage with scientific teams to comprehend experimental requirements and transform them into efficient automated workflows.
    • Integrate data collection and analysis tools into automation scripts to ensure top-notch output and traceability, aligning with the current software platform.
    • Tackle issues and enhance automated processes to minimize errors and boost productivity.
    • Provide training on automation technology to team members and design user-friendly interfaces for non-expert users.
    • Contribute to the delivery of customer and project outcomes.


    Your Background:
    • MSc or PhD in synthetic biology/engineering biology, laboratory automation, or bioengineering.
    • Demonstrated expertise in laboratory automation within engineering biology, synthetic biology, microbiology, or molecular biology fields.
    • Experience in planning and executing high-throughput experiments.
    • Solid programming abilities, particularly in automation platforms scripting (e.g., OpenTrons, CyBio Felix, Hamilton, Tecan, or Beckman Coulter systems) following software engineering best practices (e.g., version control, documentation, debugging, etc).
    • Familiarity with biological processes like cell transformation, cloning, PCR, and next-generation sequencing.
    • Proficiency in data analysis and software integration for laboratory systems.
    • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.


    Desirable Skills:
    • Background in synthetic biology or genetic engineering.
    • Knowledge of bioinformatics and synthetic biology design software and tools (e.g., SBOL).
    • Understanding of regulatory standards and quality control in a laboratory environment.
