Description

Tech Principal

We're Policy Expert, a home and motor insurance provider and we're on a mission to shake up the personal insurance industry.

We feel that insurers have under-served customers for too long with confusing policies, expensive renewals and frustrating claims processes. It is time to put customers first

Since we formed in 2011, we've been using breakthrough thinking and proprietary tech to provide insurance that's clear, fair and great value.

And people like what we do. So much so that we now have well over one million customers, driven by our double-digit growth. We also take great pride in having been the UK's No.1-rated home insurance provider for 9 years.

We have big aspirations. Our 'North Star' is 'To be the most successful insurance disruptor people want to stay with for life'.

As we grow, we plan on continuing to challenge the norms of an insurance industry whose reputation for customer trust is low, where switching between providers is high and insurance cover is often seen as a costly 'grudge purchase'.

We aim to build longer and deeper relationships with our customers and to help them see insurance as being a help, not a hindrance.

The role and what you'll be doing

A role to provide leadership, technical vision and oversight of our two Home insurance product engineering squads (Acquisition and Retention).

This is a role supporting over 1 million policy holders and growing across two cross functional product engineering teams. As a Tech Principal you will be accountable for the technical and delivery outcomes in the Home insurance domain.

Reporting to the Group Head of Technology you will impart and share knowledge with your counterparts in Motor, Pet and Shared Services to ensure we're building collaboratively whilst enabling the Home product to evolve and continue to disrupt the Insurance sector and help support our ambitious growth objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead two product engineering squads totalling ~20 engineers with Tech Leads/Engineering Managers as direct reports, coaching and developing them in their career.
  • Lead planning and prioritisation for the teams, collaborating with Tech Leads and Product Managers.
  • Partner with other Tech Principles to drive common management, operational processes, architectures and engineering excellence across the whole Policy Expert engineering organisation.
  • Lead on communication with stakeholders in Product, Pricing and across the broader business.

What we are looking for

  • Have war stories and past experience managing teams of 20+ engineers (including managing staff level and engineering managers).
  • You know what it takes to build and retain trust and understand how teams can be better than the sum of their parts.
  • You have experience championing the customer in Insurance, Insurtech or a B2C environment and know what it takes to lead true cross functional product engineering teams with a bias for action and delivery
  • Although the impact of this role is not one of hands on coding, you're a technologist at heart with a track record and have deep past specialist knowledge in Java (or comparable OOO language) and Cloud building and leading on distributed architecture design and implementation.
  • You're systematic and have great data literacy. You know how to derive insights from data and make decisions.
  • You level everyone up. You're experienced working with a diverse range of people and know how to get the best out of them whilst providing continual constructive feedback and growth opportunities.
  • Understand and can communicate clearly how to influence without authority

We therefore offer all employees:

  • Hybrid working
  • Training and education through LinkedIn learning and Plurasight
