Role Overview


Overseeing delivery of one of our four key strategic areas, the Head of Tech Startups will work with tech startup founders to support product development, connecting them with new markets and help them find investment.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of professionals dedicated to supporting tech startups and enterprises providing mentorship, guidance, and support to team members.
  • Providing strong leadership in fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation to ensure all targets are met and available resources are managed effectively.
  • Spending approximately 30% of your time to directly delivering support in our startup programmes while overseeing their implementation and success.
  • Collaborate with external partners to create opportunities for funding, collaboration, and market expansion for startup enterprises.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive network of mentors able to provide support in product development, accelerated business growth and finding investment
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance and impact of our start up programs, making datadriven decisions to continuously improve offerings and outcomes.
  • Work with our Research and Development team to support the design of new programmes and contribute to funding bids and business development.
  • Build and maintain relationships with funders and external stakeholders to ensure delivery is fit for purpose and targets are achieved.
  • Work collaboratively with Directors and other senior leaders to support the design, preparation, delivery, and evaluation of client impact for crossdepartment projects.
  • Actively contribute and lead change as part of the Senior Leadership Team.

  • Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and people management experience.
  • Ability to build and maintain external stakeholder relationships.
  • Remain solutionfocused in an everchanging environment.
  • Clear evidence of successful working across a multifaceted and complex organisation.
  • Ability to collect, analyse and report on complex project and financial data.
  • Excellent spoken/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in project management and workload management.
  • Excellent organisational skills.

  • Proven knowledge of the technology industry and needs of businesses in the sector.
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in the North East tech sector and startup ecosystems.
  • An understanding of the wider Sunderland Software City programmes and the ability to identify opportunities.
  • An understanding of local and national public sector funding.
