    Job summary

    Are you a healthcare assistant with phlebotomy experience? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Band 3 position working across the Emergency Department (ED) of Darent Valley hospital .

    We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual who enjoys patient contact and working in a busy and multi-professional team environment, to support us in the delivery of a high-quality phlebotomy service. Excellent team working and interpersonal skills will be required as well as IT skills that meet the demands of the service.

    You will work closely with the multi-disciplinary teams to provide a high standard of care and customer focus to improve the patient experience.

    Main duties of the job

    The main responsibilities for this role are to take blood samples from hospital patients with indirect supervision, according to protocols and procedures

    To provide and maintain a stable and safe clinical environment and ensuring that samples reach the Laboratory in optimum condition and in a timely manner.

    Other duties include assisting with the training and supervision of staff, providing phlebotomy related information for patients and liaising with laboratory colleagues and other services, as appropriate

    Job responsibilities

    Clinical responsibilities:

    Works independently within ED whilst undertaking phlebotomy tasks, ensuring there is a team approach with members of the healthcare team.

    Maintains the patients safety at all times, ensuring that patient identification is verified and that samples are taken and handled according to Trust and Local Policies.

    Ensures safe storage, use and administration of all medicines and substances according to Trust Policy.

    Ensures that Safeguarding procedures are followed for Vulnerable adults.

    Acts as the patients advocate at all times.

    Deals appropriately with unsuitable samples and/or requests.

    Assists with the training and supervision of staff, as directed.

    Provide phlebotomy related information for patients.

    Liaising with laboratory colleagues and other services, as appropriate.

    Assists in the maintenance and implementation of department procedures, policies and documents.

    Education and Training

    Essential

  • Formal training in Phlebotomy (must show evidence/certificate at Interview)
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Desirable

  • Customer Care Training
  • Knowledge and Skills

  • Good understanding of infection control risk and measures
  • Excellent phlebotomy techniques (to be tested at interview)
  • Experience

  • Sound knowledge and experience in Phlebotomy
