Job summary:


His Majesty's Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdom's Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, Sandown Class Mine Hunter Vessels and 43 Cdo Royal Marines.

It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites.

HMNB Clyde's primary purpose is to provide engineering and logístical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).

This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.


RNAD Coulport is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine-embarked tactical weapons.

This post is advertised as 37 hours per week.


Job description:


You will be required to manage and chair the Project Safety Design Control Committee (SDCC), as detailed within the Business Management System (BMS) and required by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DSA-02 and DSA-03), in the review and endorsement of design changes and design concessions which have Nuclear Safety Implications.

Your primary role is to ensure that the design intent and the Nuclear Site Safety Justification (NSSJ) is not compromised.


Responsibilities:


  • Support HMNB Clyde's mission of supporting the Fleet by facilitating the delivery of the Base's outputs through Chairmanship of the Project SDCC meetings in accordance with Committee Terms of Reference endorsed by the Clyde Nuclear Safety Committee (CNSC). In accordance with Authorisation Conditions (AC)13,AC19, AC20, AC21, AC2
  • Chair Project SDCC meetings in accordance with Committee Terms of Reference endorsed by the Clyde Nuclear Safety Committee (CNSC). AC1
  • To apply, through the Project SDCC, the correct level (dependent on categorisation/classification) of due process endorsement to the documents being assessed. AC13, AC19, AC20, AC21, AC2
  • To report on the Project SDCC activities and proceedings to the CNSC. AC1
  • To ensure the safety reports assessed by the Project SDCC do not invalidate compliance with Authorisation Conditions. AC13, AC19, AC20, AC21, AC2
  • To support the development of the NSSJ to meet Authorisation Conditions and modern standards. AC1
  • To advise sponsors of new projects or activities to be conducted at HMNB Clyde on the requirement for assessment by the Project SDCC and due process required. AC1
  • Support and advise CBS and the Authorisee with respect to design issues affecting Site Authorisation (this includes support to CNSC, NSSSC, NWSSSC and NSAG/DNSAG and other HMNB Clyde organisations as required). AC1
  • Maintain a register of individual appointed members and their qualifications in accordance with DSA02. AC1
  • Act as Relief Chairman for the Nuclear Site Safety Sub Committee (NSSSC). AC1
  • Liaise with DNSR and external Safety Authorities over matters concerning nuclear safety via SA Asst Hd as required.
  • Undertake other tasks identified by the line manager.

Person specification:

Core competencies appropriate to C1 grade, HNC or equivalent in an Engineering discipline.

5 Years experience in the development/production of nuclear related safety justifications.
