    Job summary

    This role will be based within the secretarial team. In this role you will be in constant contact with Medical Secretaries, Consultants, Nurses and Shared Care services and other Multidisciplinary teams. You will be first point of contact between patients and the consultant. You will be based at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    Main duties of the job

    1. The Team are organised effectively and efficiently so that they are able to operate all of their clinical and non-clinical commitments.

    2. Patient episodes are organised effectively and efficiently so that the patients are seen without clinical risk and within NHS guidelines and standards.

    3. The Trust is able to accurately review and report compliance with relevant NHS guidelines and standards with regard to waiting times and patient activity.

    4. Actions resulting from each patient episode are planned and followed up within agreed timescales.

    5. Ensure that clinic letters and discharge summaries are sent out in accordance with the locally agreed time limits.

    6. Quality checking of letters/reports/discharge summaries from audio dictation as requested by the Consultant and his/her team or Operational Support Manager.

    7. Understanding and knowledge of medical To manage and monitor the urgent Orthoptic and Optometry waiting list and book within key time frames.

    9. Any other duties as designated by the Operational Support Manager to ensure the smooth running of the medical secretarial service.

    Essential

  • Good standard of secondary education including GCE/GCSE English or equivalent
  • Knowledge of Microsoft packages including word, excel, PowerPoint and outlook
  • Experience of using hospital-based IT systems and electronic patient records
  • Able to prioritise workload
  • Able to use initiative
  • Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
  • Good team player
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • Desirable

  • RSA III Typing/equivalent or equivalent experience.
  • AMSPAR Certificate/equivalent qualification or equivalent knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Admin and /or secretarial experience
  • Audio Typing
