I am working with Aldridge Education to find a Permanent Attendance Officer to join their team at Darwen Vale High School.

You will manage an Attendance Assistant and together you will accurately work to improve pupil attendance With support from the Assistant Headteacher you will create and follow a multi approach attendance strategy.

Training will be provided, and you will benefit from the trust's excellent development programme, "Growing Together".


This role would suit someone with school attendance experience who wants to work in a friendly, well-run school that prioritises actively improving pupil attendance.

Important Details:


  • 37hours per week Monday to Friday
  • Term time and INSET days plus 1 week (40 weeks per year)
  • Actual Salary £24,463 £26,483 (SCP 1923)

Duties of the Attendance Officer:


  • Provide a high standard of operational support to the attendance service
  • Ensure the attendance module of the Management Information System is maintained to ensure an effective process is in place for the storage and retrieval of attendance and punctuality information
  • Ensure absences are correctly recorded and correct procedures adhered to
  • Provide information on attendance figures, procedures, and compliance in a timely manner prior, during, and following the audit visit
  • Produce an attendance and punctuality dashboard which showing trends for various groups over time
  • Ensure the Attendance Assistant produces weekly attendance and punctuality visuals for display
  • Ensure the Attendance Assistant produces information on an agreed schedule for the issuing of awards in line with the school rewards policy
  • Provide information and participate in discussions on attendance
  • Lead on weekly attendance meetings with Pastoral leads and hold actions to account
  • Contribute towards strategies to raise attendance figures
  • Ensure accurate recording of casework
  • Attend and give evidence in Magistrates court as required by the LA
  • Engage parent/carer(s) directly, often in their own homes, using a range of skills to enable them to understand and fulfil their legal responsibilities regarding their child's attendance
  • Process all 'Absence Request forms' in liaison with the Assistant PrincipalWork with the Assistant Principal to agree, if appropriate, requests for parttime timetable.
  • Support key pupils during exam periods to ensure their attendance
  • Track attendance of vulnerable groups in liaison with pastoral staff to ensure good attendance
  • Initiate a clear action plan if attendance falls below expectations
  • Consult with other agencies and staff to ensure the student's needs are met
  • Support the CAF process, being the lead professional in some cases
  • Represent the School at Child Protection Conferences as required
  • Refer cases to the Safeguarding Officer and work with relevant teams for the protection of children
  • Produce case files and admin support for Governor's attendance panels
  • Conduct 'Home visits' in line with Lone Working policy, keeping records
  • Produce and maintain all records relating to attendance
  • Act as a line manager as required by the Principal
  • Support and line manage the Attendance Assistant to improve attendance

Experience and Qualifications of the Attendance Officer:

  • Educated to at least GCSE standard including Maths and English
  • Grade C/5 or above
  • Experience working in a school environment
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Power Point)
  • Willingness to take required training including L3 Safeguarding and Basic First Aid
  • Proactive approach to the role
  • Good analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate verbally with, and write reports for Leadership, Governors and agencies

  • Ability to build strong relationships with colleagues at all levels
  • Selfawareness and love of learning
  • Excellent communication skills: accurate, concise, warm, and clear
  • Strong organisational skills and time management, able to adjust and prioritise
  • Familiar with school MIS (SIMS, BROMCOM, Arbor)
  • Producing statistical data in a variety of formats
  • Experience of working with students and their families to raise attendance
  • Experience in an education welfare role

An Advantage but not Essential:


  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Business Administration
  • Experience of preparing statements for court and giving verbal evidence in court
  • Working as part of an Admissions Team
  • Experience of working in a child protection capacity and attending child protection conferences
