    This specialist Dietetic Band 7 post (or Band 6 to 7 training post) will involve leading and developing the dietetic service to the supra- regional congenital hyperinsulinism service for the NW of England which is delivered jointly by Alder Hey and Royal Manchester Childrens Hospitals (NORCHI).

    The role will also provide the successful candidate with a varied caseload including in and out-patients within the medical division. This will enable you to consolidate your existing knowledge and expand your skills in the dietetic management of children and young people with complex disorders.

    The post holder will require excellent communication and multidisciplinary team working skills.

    The post can be offered as a band 6 to 7 training post dependant on experience.

    Main duties of the job
    • To use an advanced level of knowledge, skills and experience to provide highly specialist evidence based clinical dietetic advice. This includes assessment, treatment and monitoring of patients and the provision of nutrition support, both enteral and parenteral, dietetic treatment
    • To communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary care team both at an individual patient level and regarding wider aspects of dietetic and nutritional care .
    • To continuously review the evidence base for nutrition and dietetic interventions in children and young people within specialist service.
    About us Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care to over 275,000 children and young people each year. In addition to the hospital site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool, Alder Hey has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients' homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Alder Park building in the nearby borough of Sefton.

    We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We're also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Accept clinical responsibility for the dietetic management of children and young people with a broad range of complex and highly complex conditions. Organising workload effectively and efficiently according to clinical priorities.

    2. Undertake comprehensive assessment of clinical and nutritional status including anthropometrics, biochemistry, clinical condition and nutritional requirements.

    3. Analyse and interpret the results of the nutritional, biochemical and clinical assessment to help formulate both a diagnosis and a treatment plan taking into account clinical, social and cultural factors.

    4. Plan and implement dietetic intervention based on the results of the nutritional assessment to achieve the expected clinical outcome.

    5. Comprehensively assess patients requiring nutrition support including parenteral nutrition and be able to manage all the dietetic aspects of these interventions

    6. Provide suitable written and verbal information to families, nursing staff, special feeds unit and catering to ensure the provision of correct dietary treatment for in-patients.

    7. Continuously evaluate the child's clinical parameters and outcomes and modify the dietetic treatment plan as necessary to achieve expected long term dietetic and clinical outcome.

    8. Advise medical staff on the prescribing of appropriate medications and nutritional supplements to support treatment e.g. vitamins, minerals, protein and energy substitutes, pancreatic enzymes

    9. Communicate complex and sensitive information to children and their families in a way which is understandable to them and which may include unwelcome or difficult to accept information.

    10. Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings and ward rounds appropriate to the needs of the speciality area of work and ensure that the dietetic aspects of care are communicated effectively within the multidisciplinary team

    11. Continuously monitor and review the dietetic management and other associated medical treatments against outcome measures adjusting treatment and goals as appropriate to the clinical situation.

    12. Develop and maintain a range of educational resources to support dietetic advice which have a clear evidence base and which are understandable by children, young people and their families.

    13. Liaise with medical teams when clinically appropriate to arrange admissions when clinically necessary.

    14. Record accurately all dietetic intervention in line with the agreed record keeping standards of the HCPC and the department. Communicate orally, and in writing where appropriate, relevant patient information to all relevant health professionals and agencies

    15. Develop evidence-based protocols and standards of care for dietetic care of children with these specific conditions.

    16. Evaluate regional, national and international standards of care to ensure that dietetic care is delivered effectively to current accepted standards.

    17. Work with the dietetic assistants to ensure accurate and up-to-date nutritional product data is maintained

    • Demonstrable post registration experience in dietetics at a minimum of band 6 level
    • Highly competent in the interpretation of biochemical, hematological, and other clinical parameters
    • Evidence of experiential learning through continued professional development
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of the multi-disciplinary care team and to take a lead on all aspects of dietetics within the service
    • Ability to provide clinical supervision to junior dietetic staff and dietetic students
    • Evidence of experiential learning through continued professional development
    Desirable
    • Demonstrable post registration experience in dietetics at Band 7 level
    • Demonstrable post registration experience in clinical paediatric dietetics
    • Attainment of validated post-registration training in paediatric dietetics preferably at master's level
    • Ability to contribute to operational service delivery and the development of departmental structures and systems
