This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to the lives of children and young people living with Diabetes and/or Obesity within Liverpool and the surrounding regions. This dietetic assistant practitioner role is an exciting opportunity for the post holder to develop their nutrition skills and to contribute to the provision of high-quality dietetic services in this busy and highly rated children's hospital.
The successful applicant will work across both the Diabetes and Obesity services, providing job variety whilst using essential transferable skills. Both services are multi-disciplinary teams comprising of consultants, medics, specialist nurses, youth workers, specialist dietitians and other team members.
We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual with excellent communication and team working skills, to work as an integral member of the teams. A desire to work with children, young people and their families alongside demonstrating effective administrative and organisational skills is essential.
As a newly created position you will have the chance to help develop your role supported and supervised by highly specialist dietitians in both specialties. The posts offer excellent opportunities for professional and personal development as the clinical service evolves.
Main duties of the job
Day to day responsibilities could include:
Nutritional assessment and provision of dietetic advice, working alongside the dietitian to ensure that patient's nutritional needs are being met.
Engaging with young people and their families to provide support whilst they are undertaking challenging dietary changes through various settings on a one to one or group education basis.
Use of a computerised dietary nutritional assessment programme
Nutritional resource development for children, adolescents and families.
Service development, implementation and audit/survey of patient care practices as part of clinical governance.
Administration and organisation of the dietetic aspect of the service, working alongside the dietitian.
About us
Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust is a provider of specialist health care to over 275,000 children and young people each year. In addition to the hospital site located in the West Derby area of Liverpool, Alder Hey has a presence in community outreach sites and, in collaboration with other providers, our clinicians help deliver care closer to patients' homes by holding local clinics at locations from Cumbria to Shropshire, in Wales and the Isle of Man. The Trust also provides inpatient care for children with complex mental health needs at our Alder Park building in the nearby borough of Sefton.
We currently have more than 4,000 staff working across our community and hospital sites. We're also a teaching and training hospital providing education and training to around 540 medical and over 500 nursing and allied health professional students each year.

Role Summary
To assist the specialist dietitians and consultants in providing a quality dietetic service to patients within the Complex Obesity and Diabetes Services.
To deliver specific elements of dietetic management within a clear defined scope of practice and with clinical supervision provided by the specialist dietitians.
To directly support young people, families and other agencies such as schools/care settings to facilitate dietary change.
To liaise with providers of specialist prescription services to ensure that management of prescribable products is accurate, meets the needs of the individual patient and is cost effective to the NHS
To undertake administrative and clerical duties needed to maintain good organisation of the service and support the dietetic team.
Provide support, training and guidance for newly recruited Dietetic Assistants within the Dietetic department and supervise dietetic students and volunteers.
