Are you looking for a challenging and interesting opportunity? If so, the British Forces Post Office (BFPO) has a fantastic role available for a Defence Courier (DC) to join a highly motivated team of DCs and Courier Escort Drivers.


For centuries, our Armed Forces have managed an in-house postal service, delivering mail across our military history including both World Wars.

The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) provides postal and courier services to the UK Armed Forces and is a renownedbrand across Defence.

Approximately 250 dedicated, hard-working civilian and military staff work collaboratively to deliver both personal and official mail to over 650 locations across the globe; keeping our Armed Forces connected through letter and parcelservices that play a vital role in sustaining the morale of our Armed Forces.

We are looking for dynamic, self-motivated, hard-working, and organised individual for this interesting and varied role. It will involve considerable UK and overseas travel on a range of tasks escorting Material.

On a practical day-day basis a DC can betravelling either within the UK or overseas, daily, or weekly to escort or carry items to recipients in other locations.


You will be an excellent communicator with strong leadership skills, as you carry out the day-job you will have opportunities to identify and secure improvements to the way BFPO operates, as well as providing input to deliver a cost-effective and value-for-moneyservice that contributes to the 'big picture' within the UK Defence establishment.

Given this, a proactive, solution-orientated style is required and a robust and conscientious approach to completing tasks will be key to your success.


Due to security requirements, the posts are reserved for UK Nationals only (dual national applicants acceptable) and will require more in-depth security checks (Developed Vetting).

On top of the salary this position also offers an Outer London Weighting /Recruitment and Retention Allowances of £3250.


You will be required to pass the bespoke Defence Courier medical and achieve Med Category 1, in accordance with details contained in JSP 950 (available upon request), prior to being offered the provisional appointment.

About the role


As a Defence Courier, you will be responsible for the movement of Material across the UK and worldwide, ensuring that items are handled appropriately and securely on behalf of the MoD and the Government.


This appointment will enable you to develop your career and technical knowledge, to become a valued specialist within an organisation that indirectly supports our Armed Forces and Other Government Departments around the world.


Key activities will include:

  • Ensure all items in your care are moved as required under the correct diplomatic process which is covered by the Vienna Convention; ensuring that the Material carried is not tampered with or scanned at customs and is received safely, securely and withoutinterception at its destination.
  • Operating and maintaining technical ability to operate secure and specialist equipment essential to the smooth and efficient delivery of Material and completion of your duties.
  • Maintaining a good knowledge of relevant MoD policies and customs and laws of countries visiting, ensuring compliance with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office policy to ensure there are no barriers to the delivery of Material.

Person specification

  • You must hold a minimum of a Cat C1 driving licence before starting the appointment (maximum of 6 penalty points), as you will be required to drive vehicles in this category
  • The ability to travel extensively at short notice and often solo within both the UK and overseas to numerous routine and adhoc locations
  • Demonstrable willingness to complete the advanced safety and security awareness training (including oneday predeployment training package to be completed within the 6 month probation period) to comply with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Officestandards and policies
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
