Job summary

To be part of the multidisciplinary community forensic team, providing a forensic psychology service including assessment, intervention and evaluations focused on rehabilitation in the community. To offer input as required to other services within the forensic and specialist learning disabilities within the Service Line.

Main duties of the job

1. To be responsible for the systematic provision of specialist forensic psychology services to adults with learning disabilities and complex, severe and enduring mental health difficulties who may display challenging behaviour or have offending histories.

2. To undertake high quality direct (assessment and therapeutic) and indirect (consultative, advisory and evaluative) specialist psychology interventions in these services taking substantial professional responsibility and exercising autonomous judgment in their professional practice.

3. To ensure the clinical effectiveness of own practice and of service functioning by undertaking research and development activities (including training others) relevant to the service area.

4. To have regular responsibility for providing supervision to trainee and assistant psychologists in this specialism.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

1. To provide specialist forensic psychological assessment and therapy to clients in the community who have learning disabilities, offending histories, and who may have complex and severe mental health problems. To undertake a range of psychological therapeutic interventions, drawing on a range of psychological models and employing a range of modalities (individual, group).

2. To provide psychology input to multi-disciplinary teams. This will include attending clinical team meetings and case conferences/professional meetings/CPA Review Meetings and offering specialist psychological advice to the multidisciplinary formulation of appropriate therapeutic approaches or intervention plans, and being involved in, or overseeing, specialist psychological aspects of their implementation in collaboration with other staff.

3. To be responsible for providing a specialist psychological perspective in collaborating with the multidisciplinary assessment of clients accepted by the service. This may be in the form of direct intervention or the provision of regular liaison with key personnel, sharing information through a central referral system.

4. To provide specialist psychology services as required to courts, prisons, solicitors and other legal agencies.

5. To take professional responsibility and exercise the appropriate level of autonomous judgment with regard to their professional practice.

Research and Evaluation

1. To remain informed of and critically evaluate current research to support evidence-based practice in own professional work and to contribute to this perspective in the multidisciplinary team.

2. To contribute to project management of complex audits, assisting colleagues in developing service provision.

3. To contribute to the research plan for the wider Directorate by participating in service-related research and evaluation projects, as agreed with the Head of Forensic Clinical Psychology.

4. To initiate and conduct psychologically based research relevant to the care of offenders as agreed with the Lead Psychologist for community forensic LD Psychology Service and the Head of Psychology.

5. To provide advice to members of other professions as required on research design and method.

Teaching, Training, Supervision and Consultation

1. To participate in the specialist training of other psychologists as appropriate.

2. To provide consultation and advice to staff as appropriate throughout the Trust on psychological approaches to people with learning disabilities and complex needs.

3. To provide psychology teaching to other professions and trainees of other professions in collaboration with other professional tutors and teachers.

4. To provide regular clinical supervision in relation to psychological aspects of care to other staff within the service as appropriate.

5. To supervise/support assistant/ trainee psychologists and undergraduates on attachment to the service as appropriate.

6. To participate in regular supervision.

7. To participate in the Trusts KSF Review Process.

Policy and Service Development

1. To participate in multidisciplinary meetings concerned with the delivery and development of clinical services and contribute a psychological perspective as appropriate.

2. To identify appropriate developments in the services provided to address identified needs and make recommendations to the local psychology manager and the management team, and to take responsibility for implementing such developments as agreed.

3. To develop and maintain good communication links with the NHS, SocialServices, prisons, probation service, community teams and other agencies.

4. To keep informed, through supervision and discussion with the lead for community forensic LD Psychology service, of wider service developments and participate as required in these developments.

5. To keep up-to-date with relevant Trust-wide developments within the specialist psychological services.

Professional/Administrative

1. To participate in regular clinical supervision and to negotiate further specialist supervision, development and training with the Head of Psychological Therapies, fulfilling the CPD requirement of the BPS and maintaining registration with the Health Professions Council, including fulfilment of the CPD requirements

2. To work within the Code of Ethics and the relevant professional practice guidelines of the British Psychological Society, the Health Professions Council and the professional guidance framework of the Trust.

3. To work within the framework of the policies and procedures of the Trust.

4. To be responsible for relevant data collection on work activities, as required, and to maintain a high standard of clinical record keeping.

5. To participate fully in supporting the activities of the Psychology profession within the Trust, including attending relevant meetings.

6. To keep abreast of developments in Forensic Psychology, particularly in the field of Learning Disabilities Psychology.

7. To carry out such other duties as the lead for community forensic LD Psychology service may reasonably request.
