    Job summary

    An opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacist to assist the Principal Pharmacist in leading and delivering an excellent clinical pharmacy service to the pre-assessment unit. This is a full-time role ( hours per week + on-call) to cover maternity leave for 12 months. You will have the characteristics of a self-motivated, dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking individual with excellent communication skills and a background in acute hospital pharmacy service provision such that you can provide leadership and clinical expertise to shape the pre-assessment services for the Trust.

    Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the Principal Pharmacist to manage, develop and evaluate pharmacy services to the pre-assessment clinic (PAC)
  • Provide a high quality, safe and effective specialist clinical pharmacy service to the PAC
  • Manage own case load and provide expert opinion on medicines when appropriate
  • Supervise and teach pharmacists, preregistration students, undergraduate pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians in the provision of pharmacy services to the PAC
  • Assess and prioritise pharmaceutical requirements for patients reviewed at the PAC for surgical procedures
  • As an independent prescriber, prescribe medicines as appropriate within own competency
  • There will be opportunities to lead, undertake and publish research as part of an innovative pharmacy team.

    Main duties of the job

    Working closely with the pharmacy and PAC multidisciplinary teams, you will:

  • Be a member of the senior pharmacy leadership team
  • Develop, monitor and review medicines related policies and guidelines
  • Assist in provision of clinical and professional leadership in delivering a highly specialised clinical pharmacy service to patients within PAC
  • Manage a small team of pharmacists to deliver the medicines optimisation strategy for RNOH
  • Contribute to the education and training programme for all pharmacy and clinical staff
  • Meet the department and Trust's audit agenda and quality improvement objectives
  • Critical evaluation of medicines expenditure and financial reporting
  • As a registered Pharmacist you will also have a postgraduate clinical diploma or MSc in Clinical Pharmacy along with extensive experience working within a range of clinical areas. Experience of managing staff and leading projects is desirable.

    The RNOH medicines optimisation strategy is varied, interesting and rewarding. This ranges from core clinical service provision, through to individual pharmacist clinical caseload management in clinics such as rheumatology/homecare, pre-operative assessment, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) and chronic pain.

    Qualifications

    Essential

  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalen
  • Member of the GPhC
  • Higher Degree/Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy
  • Independent Prescriber qualification
  • Desirable

  • Member of the RPS
  • Member of UKCPA
  • Appropriate short management courses
  • Specialist courses/ experience in the specialist areas of anticoagulation, haemostasis, anaemia
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a clinical pharmacist practitioner, preferably within a surgical environmen
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options and dosage regimens for patients receiving medicines in these specialist areas
  • Practical clinical experience
  • Previous experience in delivering training and education
  • Demonstrable use of clinical audit to improve practice
  • Directorate pharmacist experience including working with clinicians
  • Financial evaluation and reporting
  • Desirable

  • Previous experience in pre-assessment
  • Undertaking research and publications (the postholder will be expected to actively participate in research and evaluation with a view to publication)
  • Track record of successful funding applications for research purposes
  • Recruitment, management and induction of staff
  • Experience of service improvement
  • Knowledge

    Essential

  • Good clinical practice knowledge of pre-operative assessment
  • A good understanding of national and local priorities
  • Good ability to analyse medicine usage reports
