Main duties of the job:

The post-holder will work alongside medical and clinical oncology colleagues at the Royal Free and Barnet hospital sites.

This post is essential for service provision and the development of the lung cancer and melanoma pathways, as well as contributing to the new immunotherapy MDT and clinic.

The post-holder will also support the nurse led Barnet Acute Oncology Service and the Royal Free inpatient service (3 on-call weeks per year).

Education & professional Quals:


Essential criteria:


  • Possession of MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Accreditation by the Royal College of Phyisicians or be within six months of obtaining CCT (or equivalent) at time of interview
  • Eligible for GMC registration and entry onto the GMC Specialist Register in the specialist area of Medical Oncology

Desirable criteria:


  • Postgraduate medical degree e.g. MD/PhD

Experience:


Essential criteria:


  • Experience of and commitment to multidisciplinary working
  • Wide experience in oncology
  • Experience of and an interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • The ability to work as a member of a collaborative group
  • The authority, decisionmaking skills needed to lead a multidisciplinary team in a complex environment
  • Experience of Acute Oncology
  • Experience of Lung cancer and Melanoma Oncology
  • The ability to promote teamwork and motivate colleagues
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload to delegate responsibly as appropriate and to supervise doctors in training and other staff
  • Willingness to be personally accountable for actions
  • Ability and commitment to teach in a clinical setting
  • Leadership skills and the ability to take forward service developments
  • Excellent communication skills verbal and written. Good command of written and spoken English
  • Ability to relate to patients from a wide range of backgrounds and to empathise with their concerns and needs
  • Willingness and skills to recognise and challenge unacceptable behaviour and if necessary escalate
  • Proven ability to translate research activities into a clinical and organisational context
  • Proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality research in the field, leading to publication in peerreviewed journals

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including Research governance) and understanding of current changes in the organisation and management structures of the NHS. Ability to act within these parameters
  • Awareness and understanding of health, safety and security issues for self and others

Desirable criteria:


  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of resource and budgetary management within the NHS
