    Job summary

    We are passionate about developing and improving cancer services at UHSussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team for Neuro-oncology is looking for a motivated, flexible, and resilient band 6 CNS to join our team. Working with the guidance and support of the CNS matrons and wider CNS teams, the post holder will provide individualised patient-centred care for those who have been diagnosed with neurological cancers.

    The post holder will also be leading service development and improvement at the Haywards heath and Brighton site and working collaboratively across the trust to improve communication within the MDT.

    We are a dynamic, motivated, and supportive team, who work flexibly to meet the needs of the whole service and improve it while supporting each other. Primarily based at Brighton.

    The cancer division is currently developing consistent standards of care and collaborative working across the Trust. The post holder will be instrumental in reviewing and improving communication and pathways between the multidisciplinary teams involved in the patient's care and management - involvement in service improvement projects is required.

    Main duties of the job

    Understanding neurological cancer pathways and patient treatments.

    Signpost and refer to services appropriately, such as physiotherapy, counseling, and palliative care.

    Provide support and line management to junior members of the team.

    Liaise effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary information pack.

    Provide cross-cover across disease site teams as required.

    Work effectively and collaboratively with the CNS teams across UHSx and with our partner organisations.

    Be a support and mentor to junior staff members.

    To support senior members of staff and contribute to service development - including developing appropriate KPIs that are measurable which demonstrate service improvement.

    To be able to manage the helpline and direct patients to the right source of advice, to work in ones sphere of competence but to also be aware when to seek help from senior members of the Nursing team and the medical team.

    To be computer literate and assist in appointment management and planning.

    To work effectively with the medical team and support the Doctors in routine clinics.

    Management of neurological cancer symptoms such as seizures and steroid management.

    Job responsibilities

    To include but not limited to:

    Attendance at the Multidisciplinary meetings and clinics.

    Triaging helpline contacts and making clinical decisions appropriate to your grade.

    Contact, according to standards of care, from point of diagnosis through staging, treatment, and transition to palliative care as required.

    Completion of Holistic Needs Assessments at appropriate points of the patient pathway.

    Signposting and making appropriate referrals.

    Lead on the service development of cancer CNS teams.

    Inserting nasogastric tubes where appropriate and skilled.

    Support self-care for patients with artificial feeding tubes, including planning and supporting discharge.

    Wound assessment and management.

    Presence at breaking bad news clinics as required.

    Delivering and supporting patients when receiving life-altering / limiting news.

    Demonstrate effective and compassionate enhanced communication skills.

    Ensuring pathways for investigations and treatments are timely - managing and escalating as required any concerns that may impact the diagnostic and treatment target dates.

    Working clinically autonomously to provide advice in response to unscheduled contacts from patients and professionals and in nurse led clinics.

    Reviewing current practice and working collaboratively to improve, including the development of nurse-led clinics.

    Be an influential leader to all grades and disciplines of staff.

    Promote effective teamwork.

    Conduct audit - including design and data analysis.

    Working in line with trust values and the NMC code of conduct.
