Laboratory Supervisor


The role of Laboratory Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the day to day running and maintenance of the shared molecular biology laboratories within the Plant Health Team.

The molecular facilities have undergone an expansion and consists of 15 dedicated function laboratories. The post holder will also be expected to help with molecular diagnostic work during busy periods. This role will be based within the Molecular team and work closely with the Molecular Facilities Manager.


This job would suit a well organised person with practical experience of working in a laboratory, who also has excellent communication skills and the ability to solve problems.


What you'll be doing:


  • Oversee the daytoday running of the Molecular Technology Unit, including responsibility for planning and scheduling equipment maintenance and calibration, record keeping and laboratory standards.
  • Be hands on within the laboratories, helping with facilities issues as well as staff training and support. Coordinate engineer visits and undertake improments to the facilites.
  • Communication with users of the facilities, dealing with issues and gathering feedback. Also undertake inductions and training for new staff and visitors.
  • Undertake procurement activities for the facilities including working with suppliers to streamline and provide cost savings.
  • Ensure both ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 quality standards and health and safety standards are upheld within the facility, including supporting COSHH, writing SOPs, maintaining equipment records and undertaking quality audits.
  • Help drive improvements within the facilities along with long term planning include replacement of equipment and business cases.
  • Provide molecular support to diagnostic work during busy periods.

What we're looking for:


  • Excellent planning and organisational skills along with clear record keeping.
  • Experience of working to accredited standards such as ISO 17025 and ISO 900
  • The post holder will be expected to provide timely communications to facility users and be able to troubleshoot issues in a busy environment.
  • The post holder will be expected to work in the laboratory, meticulously follow protocols and standard operating procedures and maintain high quality standards.
  • Additionally, an interest in plant health pest and diseases is desirable.
