  • Groundwater is vital for maintaining the health of rivers, wetlands and is essential for industrial, agricultural and private water supply. Yorkshire has a variety of geological and groundwater interests and pressures. Including the chalk aquifer in the East Riding of Yorkshire to the maze of mines in the South and the Pennines.
The team also work to reduce risks to people and the environment from contaminated land and groundwater.

The role will include, but not limited to:

  • Providing consultation responses to local planning authorities for developments that may pose a risk to groundwater resources.
  • Providing technical advice to customers affected by land contamination and managing sites designated Part 2a sites.
  • Working with our National Permitting Service to determine Environmental Permits and Water Resources consents.
  • Give technical advice to internal regulatory teams regarding risks to groundwater.
  • Supporting our Groundwater Level and Groundwater Quality networks across Yorkshire.
  • Providing technical advice to various external customers and stakeholders. For example; Yorkshire Water, the Coal Authority and the British Geological Society.

As responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.


  • The team
  • Team members are dispersed across a number of offices across Yorkshire. They utilise their skills and experience to provide technical advice to a variety of other teams across the Environment Agency and externally through inperson and virtual meetings, site visits & other communication methods.
The team has a supportive culture despite being dispersed. We prioritise the personal and professional development of team members, including supporting membership to a relevant professional body.

  • Experience/skills required
  • You will hold a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and/or relevant work experience. You will be able to demonstrate an awareness and/or experience of the following skills;
  • Hydrogeology, contaminated land and/or water quality knowledge.
  • The ability to solve problems and make riskbased decisions based on complex or incomplete information.
  • The ability to use technical knowledge to present a clear and reasoned justification for decisions.
  • The ability to work as part of a team to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent communication skills. The ability to communicate with a wide range of customers.
  • Be a member of a relevant professional body or have a desire to work towards this.
  • Understanding of Environmental Permitting Regulations, Water Recourses Act, Town and Country Planning and the Water Framework Directive.


Other key requirements for this job include; proficiency in GIS, data handling and analysis, good time management and developed organisational skills.

  • The role is based in one of our Yorkshire offices: York, Leeds, Rotherham, Beverley or Sheffield. We offer flexible working between office and home and the role is open to full time and/or part time hours. You will be required to travel to other office locations for meetings and to undertake occasional site visits. A full UK driving licence would be an advantage.
