POST:
| Support Worker

|

LOCATION:
| Wardley, Gateshead

|

JOB PURPOSE:
| To provide enabling support for a 8-year-old male child with a diagnosis of down syndrome.

|

REF:
| NP/WARAD

THIS IS A SCHOOL HOLIDAY POSITION ONLY (NON TERM TIME)

Main Duties

  • We are looking to recruit a support worker to provide support for the young man both at home and to access ageappropriate activities in the community.
  • The young man has a diagnosis of Down Syndrome. He is nonverbal but can communicate his needs through gestures and pointing. He has good understanding and can follow simple instructions.
  • He is a cheeky and mischievous young man who loves to make people laugh. The family would prefer to employ a worker with a great sense of humour, who is keen to engage in the fun and games he enjoys.
  • The young man enjoys being outdoors, visiting parks, attending soft play areas and trampolining. An active person who will engage in these activities is preferred. He loves to be outdoors but has no risk awareness and support to ensure his safety will be required.
  • When the weather is not on his side he is just as happy being indoors, with 1:1 adult attention playing card games e.g. matching animals or other age appropriate 1:1 activity. Although he is 8 years old, he has developmental delay and his presentation is more that of a 3 or 4yearold, as such toddler behaviours can sometimes occur. The ideal worker will be prepared for this and able to use distraction to bring him round.
  • The young man is PEG fed and full training will be provided around this.
  • Due to his diagnosis, he wears nappies and as a result personal care will be a requirement of this role.
  • Car drivers are preferred but not essential and must be insured for business use. Mileage will be paid in agreement with the employer.

Hours

  • 12 hours per week during
school holidays only (13 weeks per year):
  • Hours to be used flexibly during the school holidays

Rate of pay
- £10.82 per hour.

  • Holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks per year prorata.
  • Outofpocket expenses will be paid by the employer.

Person Specification

The successful applicant must:

  • Have experience and a positive understanding of children with disabilities
  • Have a genuine interest in working with young people with complex needs
  • Be able to respond patiently, positively, and sensitively to any changes in behaviour
  • Have a high degree of initiative
  • Be punctual and reliable as the young person cannot be left unsupervised
  • Be flexible
