We are looking for conscientious, empathetic Healthcare Security officers to join our friendly security team here at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

You will ensure that hospitals and other NHS sites are accessible and safe for patients, visitors and staff, and also protect buildings and valuable equipment.


This role is ideal for anyone who is enthusiastic about security but is also a people person, because you will have the opportunity to meet, talk and work with a variety of different people across the hospital site.


Guy's and St Thomas' Security Services provide support to all the services within the Trust, with a fundamental role of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our staff, patients and visitors.

Our service provision has a fundamental role in supporting the clinical activities in the Trust. Essentia's focus is to provide a high quality hospital environment and experience for our patients, visitors and staff.

This will be achieved by setting new and improved standards within the overall programme of improvements to the range of services provided by fostering a strong overarching patient focused approach.


  • To work with fellow Healthcare Security Officers to provide a professional security service that will protect, offer advice, investigate and act in an endeavor to create and maintain a safe and crimefree environment for staff, patients and visitors 24 hours a day, 365 days per annum.
  • To work with and alongside, other Trust colleagues to ensure that staff, patients and visitors are assisted, at all times and in any appropriate matters, in a manner that reflects positively on the Trust and the service.
  • The security team throughout the Trust are required to balance the needs of the visitors experience with the security of the premises. Good interpersonal skills with strong oral communication are essential. Officers will be required to maintain a high level of personal appearance, be physically fit and able to conduct themselves appropriately in a customer facing role at all times. The ability to work as a team member and to support colleagues in the completion of their duties are essential within this role.
  • To act as an ambassador for the Department, Directorate and the Trust ensuring that their conduct is of the highest professional level.


The post holder will be part of a very well respected, dynamic and skilled team with the ability to build on the strengths and experiences of the current security team, yet be flexible enough to ensure the needs and objectives of both the service and the Trust are met.

To be primarily employed on the Guy's & St Thomas main sites working a twenty-four hour shift based pattern.


It is the responsibility of all employees to work within the security policies and procedures at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust to protect the patients, staff and visitors and the property of the Trust.

This duty applies to the specific work area of the individual and the Hospital in general. All staff are required to wear official identification badges.

1.1 To patrol the internal & external grounds of Guy's & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust estate to protect the buildings and its contents from fire and theft as directed by the Security Team Leader.

1.2 To maintain all equipment and uniform supplied in a clean and presentable manner, full uniform must be worn at all times while on duty in the line with the Trust's Uniform Policy


1.3 To respond immediately to all fire alert calls, taking action in line with the Trust fire procedures, to minimize the risk to life and assets.

To ensure fire escape routes are clear and equipment are in working order and fully accessible at all times and current relevant fire legislation is being complied with.

1.4 To respond to calls for security assistance from Emergency Department medical staff or Mental Health teams to assist with patients being held or assessed under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)

1.5 To conduct patient monitoring roles as requested by security management or clinical leads. To record all actions on the relevant Trust records


1.6 To respond to calls from ward/department staff to deal with patients who are being violent, abusive, disruptive or have absconded from the ward, assess the situation and take appropriate action to resolve the situation taking relevant factors into consideration.


1.7 Ensure that visitors of all kinds are courteously received, assisted and directed in a manner which will reflect credit to the Trust.

1.8 To undertake duty escorts as required and directed by the Security Team Leader/Trust Operations Managers.

1.9 To report security defects or omissions throughout the estate in a timely and accurate manner.
