Experience

My name is Ana Almeida. I'm originally from Lisbon, Portugal. I possess a degree in Thanatology, Pathology, and Cytology Anatomy.
Studying biomedical science and its application to life processes to gain an understanding of health and methods for diagnosing, analyzing, and treating disease- the ability to work in areas such as management, education, and in modernized clinical laboratories like yours make it a continually changing and dynamic profession with long careers prospect which has to be my sole reason of choosing the role of Biomedical Scientist.
I believe your organization can help me achieve my continuing professional development goals with a benefit that can range from my ongoing personal development to clinical excellence and leadership skills.

Currently, I work as a band 4 POCT Associate Practitioner with South West Pathology London (SWLP). It has helped me to broaden my knowledge with Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training with ROCHE & Radiometer, as well as to be competent in maintaining and troubleshooting Blood Gas Analyzers (ABG)/ Glucose Meters (GM) and i-STAT analysers, following the SOPs.
I have been managing POCT independently, which involves planning, monitoring, and providing training to staff (such as laboratory staff, POCT staff and end users); on the use of POCT equipment and any associated software to manage POCT equipment and users; assisting in ensuring that training and competency assessments for all POCT equipment users are recorded and stored per departmental procedures; monitor and tend equipment issues and end-user compliance with policies and procedures; maintaining compliance with ISO, MHRA, and other relevant standards in the POCT department. My responsibility is also to ensure that wards and users participate in agreed quality assurance and quality initiatives for quality management purposes, such as audits and quality assurance surveys.
This allows me to define goals and objectives, organise them based on their urgency, value, and importance, manage a team, train and supervise band 3, allocate resources and manage budgets, ensuring that the POCT department has the necessary resources. I also developed and implemented new policies and procedures, monitoring and evaluating the department's performance and making necessary improvements.

My previous role as an advanced Biomedical Support Worker at South West London Pathology enabled me to understand and perform work per the standard operating policies using basic theoretical knowledge to perform assigned laboratory tests, assisting in the supervision of Biomedical Support Workers, and working cohesively with all members of the department team in ensuring that the very best services to patients are provided at all times. This contributes toward a culture of equality in executing my daily task and aids the quality initiatives within me consistent with maintaining laboratory accreditation.

I'm familiarized with the different diagnostic devices that I will use, and also with the disciplines of chemistry, hematology, and infectious diseases.
I am competent in carrying out pre-analytical tasks, such as loading/ unloading samples, based on their urgency on P612, Cobas 8000, DXH, and ACL Top Analysers.

In my previous biomedical scientist experience in Portugal, and also during my internship undertaken over my Biomedical Science degree, I practice providing quality reports, routinely in the laboratory. Internal quality control (IQC) and external quality assessment (EQA) programs are done which help to evaluate and continuously improve analytical quality. I also gain the competencies and skills required for this job.

During my time as an air stewardess with Norwegian airlines, I was able to meet people from all backgrounds and cultures. I was able to facilitate and cater to their needs which developed my empathic communicational skills which will prove beneficial within this role as I would be required to assist staff and patients of all diversities & ages. I'm very enthusiastic when it comes to helping patients and am very motivated when I'm intellectually stimulated. No two days will be alike, something that I'm looking forward to.
Sharing knowledge helps people connect, perform better, and become stronger as professionals. That is why I'm confident and happy to teach and train new users.
