About Andrew Borrill:
I am a trained physicist with a particular interest in stochastic mathematical modelling for biological and financial applications, though I currently work in defence.
Outside of work, I enjoy sports (squash, BJJ, football, calisthenics),, reading philosophical (particularly ancient Platonic metaphysics, philosophy of science, epistemology, and truth) and biological texts, and spending a lot of time with my wife and family.
Experience
Software Engineer - Leonardo UK
The bulk of my role is focused on developing and architecting, reusable, efficient, object orientated software in C++, with further responsibility in the design and implementation of unit tests. A significant part of my role is spent base-lining the performance of radar software on hardware implementations. This requires the building of real-time operating
systems, and the re-design of software solutions to fit time constraints, typically by the implementation of standard design patterns.
Software Engineer
BAO Systems
BAO Systems maintains and develops client specific software solutions for DHIS2, a large healthcare information management system. My primary roles were to extract & manipulate data (using SQL and regex) and to develop back-end software solutions in python. I developed the skills, and knowledge of software practices, needed to develop complex software solutions, along with the ability to communicate the results to non-technical clients.
Senior Radar Scientist
Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl)
My primary role was to research various areas of radar signal processing, with a particular focus on the underpinning mathematics and stochastic processes, along with the development of software models. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, I cannot give many details, however, some of the topics I gained experience in include: Applied Mathematics
(Maximum likelihood estimation, minimum mean square error estimation, multivariate probability, Markov processes, measurement uncertainty & error propagation, probability & measure theory, Gambler’s ruin statistics, principle component analysis, linear algebra, coordinate transforms & tensors, group theory, reinforcement learning & Bellman equations) and software development skills.
