About Andrew Mitchell:

I am currently in the very final stages of completing my PhD in Applied Mathematics, specifically Fluid Mechanics. I will be submitting my thesis on the 30th of September 2023 and completing my viva in the month or two that follow (depending on the availability of my examiners). I have studied many aspects of fluid flow in my PhD, with a specialisation in applying analytical, asymptotic and numerical mathematical methods to model the flow of thin films of fluid. Thin films of fluid are ubiquitous in nature and industry, for example, large scale flows of mud, slurry, lava and rivers, to small scale flows such as ink in inkjet printers, coolants in heat exchangers, and microfluidic computer chips. Specifically, my research includes modelling of the interaction of thin films of fluid and airflows, the flow of fluid through permeable materials and the evaporation of fluids on heated or non-heated substrates. I currently have two research papers published in highly reputable academic journals:

  • Mitchell, A., Duffy, B., & Wilson, S. (2022). Coating flow on a rotating cylinder in the presence of an irrotational airflow with circulation. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 932, A33.
  • Mitchell, Andrew J., Brian R. Duffy, and Stephen K. Wilson. "Unsteady coating flow on a rotating cylinder in the presence of an irrotational airflow with circulation." Physics of Fluids 34.4 (2022).

I would be very interested in a career in which I am able to apply my knowledge of modelling the behaviour of fluids to large scale, real world problems.

Experience

My professional experience I have acquired thus far is as follows:

  • I worked in a restaurant during my undergraduate degree studies, between the years of 2012-2016. During this time I developed the skills required to work as part of a team, namely, communication, patience, empathy and organisation. I also experienced the excellent social aspect of working in a large team, and making many great friends.
  • For the previous 6 years I have been tutoring mathematics both privately to high school level students, and as part of my PhD to undergraduate students. Teaching students mathematics requires a lot of “horizontal thinking”, i.e. not every student is going to learn abstract concepts the way that I have learned them. Hence, I have found that it is often important to be able to explain difficult concepts in a multitude of ways, in order to effectively explain them.

Education

My most relevant education is as follows:

  • Masters degree in Applied Mathematics. University of Strathclyde 2019.
  • PhD in Applied Mathematics. University of Strathclyde. Near completion. Thesis submission date 30th September 2023. Viva date to be confirmed, but should be in before the end of 2023.
