Experience
I am a journalist and creative writer with the ability to ask the right questions and a flair for telling an impactful story. I have worked across the north of England in a variety of roles, including reporter, sub editor, news editor, specialist writer (including films, politics) and can get the best out of people in any walk of life - from the person next door to an international celebrity.
My first reporter role was at the Spenborough Guardian followed by the Harrogate-based Ackrill newspaper group, then five years at the Yorkshire Post, where one of my responsibilities as as chief reporter for West Yorkshire.
That was followed by 12 years at the National Media Museum in Bradford, where I led the team responsible for delivering the film programme, including the annual Bradford Film Festival.
I left the museum to be a partner in Reel Solutions LLP, a film agency and consultancy delivering support to cinemas and venues running film programmes and festivals. Clients included Cambridge Film Festival, Derby QUAD, Derby Film Festival, Harrogate Literature Festival, Holmfirth Film Festival, and Ilkley Film Festival. I also founded the FANTASTIQ festival.
For five years I was a contributor to BBC Radio Leeds, providing coverage of new film release. I also freelanced for ITV Yorkshire as film critic/co-presenter on a range of programmes including Tonight, Calendar, Body and Soul, The Magic of the Movies, The Buzz, New Visions, and Film Festival 2001, which I presented.
For the BBC television I guested on Look North and Inside Out, and appeared in radio documentaries on classic movies Brassed Off and Billy Liar.
From 2018 to 2022 I was a local democracy reporter with a brief to cover Kirklees Council. I left that role to take up a short-term contract with Kim Leadbeater MP as constituency support manager.
I am the author of seven books, including a study of the actor Peter Cushing, and Made in Yorkshire, an overview of 120 years of cinema in the Broad Acres. I also write short fiction and have had more than a dozen stories published in various anthologies.
Between 2010 and 2020 I was a guest lecturer on film and film journalism at the University of Huddersfield, Leeds Trinity University, Sheffield Hallam University, Edge Hill University, and Bradford College.
I completed my Masters in English by Research at Sheffield Hallam University in 2017.
