Scientific
About Charlie Guymer:
A recent MRes graduate, specialising in vascular development. Experience working with chicken embryos and running in situ hybridisations, vibrate sectioning, antibody staining, microsurgery such as protein soaked bead implantation and tissue grafting. Proven ability for data documentation with microscopy and making figures in photoshop, excel in scientific writing.
Experience
Handling complex protocols Routinely planned and completed RNA in situ hybridizations. Antibody staining. Troubleshooting protocols.
Microbiology Growth of plasmid-harbouring E. coli using general microbiology lab practice. Isolation and purification of plasmid DNA
Microsurgery Harvesting chicken embryos from stages HH3-HH14 with great success. Implanted protein-soaked beads into head mesoderm, tissue explants and tissue grafting.
Scientific initiative Successfully produced a protocol for expired and unknown collagen for use in explant culture. Optimized a protocol for intracardial microinjection, better suiting the delivery and circulation of fluorescent dye.
Efficient science communication and documentation Commended ability for scientific writing. Maintain detailed lab notes, digital microscopy, using Adobe Photoshop to refine images and construct good quality figures. |
Education
My most recent qualification was an MRes at the Univeristy of Portsmouth where I investigated the Origin and development of the brain's PNVP. During my project I gained experience in RNA in situ hybridisation, RNA probe synthesis, antibody staining, micro-surgery and digital microscopy. As part of the programme, I produced a literature review and presented a poster and research talk before colleagues. I was required to work independently and regularly update my supervisor on previously agreed targets. I became accustomed to working with precision and independence, producing work of high academic standard and integrity. I showed initiative and formulated a protocol to get an unknown and expired collagen to set for explant culture experiments as well as optimising a microinjection protocol to better suit my needs. My efforts were commended for the quality of scientific writing in my manuscript. Throughout the year my grades continually improved as I grew in confidence and began to understand what it takes to drive a research project forward.
