Experience
VOLUNTEER PEER SUPPORT WORKER & GROUP FACILITATOR, WOMENCENTRE.
April 2022 -Current
I am a peer support volunteer as part of Project 1125. This group is dedicated to helping vulnerable young women from the ages of 11 to 25. I provide and am involved in 1-1 support and group sessions around mental health, wellbeing, and healthy relationships. This project aims to help girls through adolescence and troubling times. These women could be struggling with issues such as mental health, domestic abuse, or tough home situations.
My responsibilities include:
- Working independently or alongside colleagues to plan, prepare and deliver group sessions around different topics relevant to the young women, as well as planning and taking the girls to other activities outside of the WomenCentre. This includes working at the WomenCentre Kirklees, Halifax and within high schools and college.
- Encouraging young girls and women to engage in discussion, ensuring they feel comfortable enough to do so and promoting positive behaviour within the group.
- Forwarding and referring girls on to outside services that are beneficial to them, such as food banks or DV support groups.
- Having regular check ins with the girls and colleagues to support and make sure the women are safe within their personal and home lives, knowing their whereabouts during group sessions, and providing 1-1 support outside of working hours.
- Dealing with serious issues appropriately by being able to calmy deal with the situation and using appropriate safeguarding measures to resolve or pass on the matter at hand, this could mean contacting authorities.
- Attending regular meetings and events to discuss and give presentations around the work within Project 1125.
- Working and helping produce social media projects to try reach a wider audience and promote the work.
- Receiving regular training around safeguarding adults and children, confidentiality, health & safety and more.
