Experience
As a Student at the department of radiology and Imaging sciences, I have acquired all the basic knowledge on (i) Nuclear magnetic resonance like Physics & Principles, Instrumentation, Image quality, Image formation, Pulse sequences, Quality assurance, Care and Safety of MRI, I have learned all the basic and advanced scanning protocols with patient preparations (brain spectroscopy & perfusion, MRCP, dynamic contrast-enhanced studies, functional imaging, Cardiac MRI, musculoskeletal studies), and all the basic & advanced post-processing techniques. (ii) In Computed tomography I understood the basic working principle, physics & instrumentation, CT image quality, image formation, CT doses, and quality assurance. I worked 24hrs a day including regular working hours, emergency duties, assisting radiologists, performing 60 – 70 X-rays, 6 – 8 Fluoroscopic procedures, 30 – 40 CT’s AND 25 – 30 MRI’s on average daily categories of patients, which includes Stable, Ambulatory, Critically ill, Traumatic, Neonates and Anaesthetized patients, I worked diligently in the department in various modalities and I always coordinate with doctors and my subordinates to provide extensive care to patients with good academic support and in the department I have had a good opportunity to gain my knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology basis of imaging equipment and also image formation related physics and radiation safety. I have always been optimistic and efficient to staff and have acquired many skills in the radiology department.
As an intern in the department, I have to check the equipment status, receive the patients, check the identity, verify the request, screen and counsel the patient, obtain consent, document the clinical history, educate the patient, perform the scan, post-processing, document it on CD or films, and ensure the reports are dispatched on time. My major responsibility is to identify, protect and promote patients’ rights and inform the patient of their rights, perform a range of radiographic examinations on patients and yield high-quality images for radiologist’s interpretation, to ensure radiation safety in my work area including checking equipment for malfunctions and errors, I manage referrals to ensure my patients receive a radiation dose As low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
I strictly adhere to clinical, ethical, and legal responsibilities to all the patients and I co-ordinate with department of Anaesthesiology for studies performed under procedural sedation/ General anaesthesia. I always monitor the visiting staff and patients in radiation zones, and provided support and reassurance to patients, taking into account of their physical and physiological needs. And I keep up to date with my knowledge with health and safety guidelines including ionizing radiation regulations to protect patient and personnel. Ideally, I always make clear understanding of the patient’s health condition, explanation of the procedure, discussion of benefits, risks and alternatives to the procedure, and educate patients and their family members regarding the procedure. I used to ensure personnel safety, by wearing personnel protective equipment including lead aprons, thyroid collars, lead glasses and screens to prevent radiation exposure.
