About Demi Carroll:

I am a 20 year old student (currently studying social work) who for the past 6 years have been working in Food and beverage roles. My current position is in F&B within Park Inn hotel in Aberdeen where I have been working for the past year and a half. I have been working to provide our guests with the best, friendliest service as well as ensuring our restaurant and bar is super clean and everyone is happy with their food and drinks. I would love to have the opportunity to further these skills through a new job experience, whilst also bringing along everything I have learned from my current job. Due to being a student I am available after university hours (around 4pm) and most weekends during term time and then also during the holidays.

I am an outgoing individual with excellent people skills due to my jobs as well as studying health and social care for the past 4 years. I am also very knowledgeable in the operations of restaurants and bars and how to provide customers with the best service. I highly enjoy working with the public as well as socialising with my friends and meeting new people. In school I also had quite an interest in drama and performing arts and excelled in my drama exam.

Experience

Since I was 15 I worked as a counter assistant in front of house at a Chinese takeaway. My job consisted of greeting customers with a smile as well as taking their orders on the phone and in person. I ensured that the front of shop and all the counters were kept clean and tidy. I interacted with all the customers with friendly chat, ensuring all their needs were met and answering any queries they may have had. I stocked up the juice and prawn crackers and ensured that all receipts were kept safe and tidy. I took the customers payments and make sure they received the correct change and I served the customers meals to them once they were cooked. This gave me lots of skills over the years including excellent customer service, communication, serving, taking orders, and dealing with fast-paced stressful situations.

For the past year and a half I have been working as a food and beverage assistant within Park Inn by Raddison hotel in Aberdeen. My duties in the restaurant include, greeting customers, setting up the restaurant, serving food, clearing up, communicating with other departments such as kitchen, reception, and housekeeping, and ensuring all guests felt happy and welcomed with everything they needed. During this role I also work with groups of guests from Germany, Spain, Italy, and Ukraine, who mostly don’t speak English, therefore I managed the task of communicating through a language barrier.

I also worked bar shifts during my time at park inn which included all of these things but also included learning about all the different types of alcohol, serving proper measurements and pint pouring, ensuring everyone I served was legal and looked after in our bar and helping customers make decisions on what types of alcohol they wanted. Within my roles at park inn I also did allergens awareness training, table service training, and alcohol licencing training.

Education

I left high school after 5th year in 2019 and went straight to college. I left school with a higher English, four national 5’s (Drama, history, English, and biology), and national 4’s in computing science and maths.

From summer 2019-summer 2020 I attend Dundee and angus college at the Gardyne campus. In college I gained my advanced certificate in health and  social care qualification (SCQF level 6). I also gained a level 6 in communication and level 5 in ICT and numeracy.

From august 2020- august 2021 I attended Dundee and Angus college again and achieved my qualification in HNC social services. This year helped me expand my IT skills as the course was online due to coronavirus. I graduated at the end of this and applied to university.

From September 2021-2022 I had been attending Robert Gordon University studying BSc mental health nursing. My first year had been so beneficial to my development as I have had to adapt to new surroundings quickly, learnt so many important life skills and learnt professional ways of dealing with things. As well as this I had an opportunity to go to the Orkney Islands for 6 weeks to attend a placement with the community mental health team, which let me practice my people skills, taught me to cope with difficult emotions, as well as showing me different ways of living.

From September 2022-present I have still been attending Robert Gordon University but this year studying social work, which has been great for expanding my people skills as well as giving me time to work in my F&B role in Park inn.
