Hi,

I am a Biomedical Scientist based in the United Kingdom and have worked in this field for the last 6 years. My experience is particularly in Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion.

I am looking for a similar role in the Middle East in order to gain more experience in a new setting.

Blood Transfusion: 

• Run samples for Group and screen and ensure the strict no zero tolerance policy is met for the samples (minimum points of ID, hand-written, signed and dated and time) as well as how long the sample is valid
• Aware of the different ABO blood groups and how to deal with any anomalies such as no reaction in reverse cells and dual population in wells. The significance of an antibody screen result is also an essential part of Transfusion as this had an impact on the requirements of a cross-match. I understand the implication of a positive antibody screen and how to do an antibody panel such as the IAT panel and Papain panel.
• Perform Serological and Electronic crossmatches
• Confident in the use of platelet and plasma such as Fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate sample. I have knowledge and experience in the special requirements such as irradiated blood components .
• Also have experience in issuing anti-D when required (i.e. in the case of a sensitising event) and the importance of issuing within 72 hours if necessary. Other batch products I have had experience in dealing with are Albumin and Beriplex.
• Experience with transfusion analysers such as the IH-1000, IH-500, Gel station and Grifols. I am fully confident and well-skilled in using the analysers, running quality controls, troubleshooting and the daily maintenance of the analysers.  .
• Aware of the different regulations and bodies that regulate the laboratory such as the MHRA, UKAS, BSQR and SHOT.

Haematology and Coagulation:

•     In Haematology, I process samples for tests such as Full Blood Count, Glandular fever, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Malaria and Blood Films using the Sysmex analysers and tests kits in the laboratory. I carry out the daily maintenance of the analysers including processing the internal quality controls, check sample integrity, validate results and add on confirmation tests. 
• I am fully competent in using the Sysmex analysers for both Haematology and Coagulation as well as the Beckman for Haematology and ACL Top for Coagulation.
• Morphology trained and can identify significant features such as blasts, red cell fragments (haemolysis) and myeloid precursors. 
• Can perform Malaria rapid test, examine malaria films and perform a parasitaemia.
• Perform haemoglobinopathy screening on Antenatal patients using the Sebia analyser and interpret the results.
• In coagulation, my role is similar, but tests carried out are clotting screen, D-Dimer and Fibrinogen.  
• I am aware of the different special coagulation tests such as Thrombophilia, Factor V Leiden and Von Willebrand factor.
• I have participated in NEQAS for both haematology and coagulation.

Other responsibilities I have is the general maintenance of the laboratory such as monitoring temperatures of fridges, freezers, daily internal quality controls (including quality management systems such as audits, use of Standard operating procedures and external quality assurances e.g. NEQAS) and ensuring results are validated and turn-around times are met. In addition, I am aware and experienced in how to deal with emergency situations in Transfusion such as major haemorrhages and the use of O negative and O positive blood.

• Performing and interpreting a range of laboratory tests on blood using the Sysmex XN900 AND CS2100
• Maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment
• Record keeping and quality control
• Providing results to medical staff
• Participate in continuing education and training for CPD purposes
   

Covid-19 testing:

• Used Cepheid genexpert to test swabs for Covid-19
• Performed weekly and daily maintenance
• Prioritise inpatient and outpatients
• Ensure turnaround time was met

Blood Transfusion:

• Process all transfusion samples according to its priority
• Issue blood components as required
• Used analysers such as IH-500, IH-1000 and Gel station
• Run quality control daily and participate in NEQAS

Haematology& Coagulation:

• Perform Manual tests such as Malaria screen, sickle solubility test and glandular fever
• Use Sysmex XE2100 to perform FBC and participate in troubleshooting and maintenance of analyser
• Validate results and inform medical staff if required.
