Experience

I didn’t know I had passion for care giving, until I cared for my grandmother, who had dementia before she passed away recently. This, I would say, made me to want a career in care giving. As a caregiver, I always maintain compassion, dignity and respect, responsibility, openness, honesty, quality, confidentiality and health and safety.

Besides being a care giver, I am an articulate, qualified and highly skilled English teacher, who communicates effectively, with students from diverse backgrounds and with varying degrees of ability. Furthermore, I am a committed and dedicated professional, with a proven ability in teaching, knowledge transfer, motivating and helping students to maximize their ability and their overall learning experience, through engagement and creation of positive learning environment.

As a high school teacher, I taught and mentored children of ages 10-16, helping them navigate their academic lives, the emotional and psychological troubles of transitioning from childhood to teenage life, including helping some of them from troubled and dysfunctional homes and those with learning difficulties. With my mentorship and devoting more time to them, considering their special needs, I was able to improve the quality of their lives and overall academic performance.

I am passionate to see people’s well being improved. I can make decision and employ problem solving skills, when necessary. In the course of my teaching one day, I noticed one of the students was not performing as expected. On further enquiries, I discovered that the student had learning difficulty. Immediately I noticed this, I started to provide additional support for the student, in order to catch up with rest of the group. Subsequent results proved that the support I provided to the student helped to improve his overall learning experience.

I am a person of initiative and cannot but help, once there is a need. I see every opportunity to help someone as a privilege, which I would not want to miss. During my National Youth Service Corps in Nigeria, I volunteered to help an aged, childless woman in the rural community, where I served. I was visiting her 3 times per week, to help tidy her environs, wash her clothes, make her hair and help her go for shopping in the local market, as well as make her meals.

I had the opportunity of providing respite care for my grandmother in her old age and last days, whenever I am on long vacation from school. My grandmother had dementia and lived with us at the time. I took active part in giving her care, which includes, but not limited to: her hair care (washing and plaiting her hair), helping her use the toilet, washing her clothes, helping to organise her room, making her meals, taking her out for family and social functions, including visits to her friends, taking her for hospital appointments and administering her prescribed medications at home.

It gives me joy to be part of a team, formal or informal and I have always known to strive, not to be the weak link. Rather, I work in compliance, making every effort to see my team succeed. As a school teacher, I have always worked other teachers and new intakes, mentoring and providing support where necessary. I also liaise with parents and counsellors, to make sure my students make good academic and behavioural progress. I have also worked in several committees, as a secretary. I have always been available to take minutes and perform some other tasks, to see the success of the committee and project execution.

I worked with my mother, other family members, as well as health care providers, to see that my grandmother was well taken care of, in her old age and the last days, until her peaceful passing.
