About Jinnurain Tasbir Shatil:

I am Jinnurain Tasbir Shatil. Recently, I completed my master's in International Planning and Urban Design (IPUD) at Cardiff University. Currently, I am looking for a full-time job as an Urban Designer. I believe that I have the skills, experience, and qualifications that would make me the perfect candidate for the job. With my strong academic and professional background in architecture and urban design and my passion for creating sustainable and vibrant urban spaces, I am confident in my ability to contribute to making a meaningful impact in creating healthier, happier, fairer communities that affordable, accessible, and liveable to all.

With my bachelor's degree in architecture and eight years of practical experience in architecture and urban design in Bangladesh, I was involved with various projects. Some of the critical roles and responsibilities that I have accomplished as a practicing urban designer are as follows:

  1. Urban Built Environment Mega Projects, including Public Realm and Landscape Projects: As the team leader, Project Coordinator, and Urban Designer, I have successfully designed and completed numerous public realm and landscape projects in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), for creating environments that promote community well-being, inclusivity, and sustainability. My involvement in executing tasks such as rehabilitating urban areas, promoting walkability and accessibility, integrating green infrastructure solutions, upgrading urban green spaces and water bodies, and redevelopment of the cycle network in Dhaka City has been successfully implemented impacting the built environment positively. My expertise extends to master planning projects of various sizes and scales, including transport infrastructures, institutions, urban complexes, recreational facilities, and public amenities in the community. Furthermore, I possess experience in land use planning, environmental impact assessment, feasibility studies, inception reports, site visit appraisals, proposals, and other technical drawings, documents, and information necessary for successful project completion.
  2.  Production of Technical Drawings and Specifications Using Design Software: As a consummate professional, I maintain complete involvement and proper management throughout all project stages. I take charge of every aspect, from initial reports to sustainable concepts and ideas. I create presentations, architectural working drawings, and construction drawings, prepare specifications, and oversee site visits while preparing reports. Additionally, my proficiency in industry-standard design software, such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Lumion, and M.S. Office Suite, as well as Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, ensure that my projects are developed to the highest possible standard. My excellent hand-drawing, hand sketching, digital vector illustrations, and painting skills also allow me to showcase initial project ideas and concepts in the shortest possible time frame, making me a highly efficient and effective urban designer.
  3.  Placemaking, Co-design, and Public Participatory Design Engagement with the Communities: Being an urban designer, coordinator, and team leader, I spearheaded the process of active place-making, co-designing, and public participatory design engagement for the urban design mega projects. My involvement in place-making, co-designing, and participatory design engagement with the community, particularly with children and youth, has been impactful. Our main goal was to work closely with the community people, particularly children, and youth, to ensure that our designs were accessible, and walkable and offered cycling facilities and other amenities to promote sustainable communities across the cities. It was a challenging but fulfilling task that solidified our relationships with the communities we served.
  4. Leadership, Teamwork, and Project Management Skills:  As a skilled project manager, I have successfully overseen various initiatives and ensured their timely and cost-effective completion while maintaining the highest health and safety standards. As a consummate professional, I believe in complete teamwork while maintaining full involvement and proper management throughout all project stages. I take charge of every aspect, from initial reports to sustainable concepts and ideas. Moreover, under my leadership, more than 70 architects, planners, engineers, environmentalists, horticulturists, botanists, and economists were actively involved in some crucial community-based urban design projects. Our tireless work resulted in the creation of beautiful and sustainable public spaces for the people of Dhaka. Witnessing our projects' positive impact on the community was an enriching experience.
  5.  Project Proposal and Bid Documents: During my practice, I was directly involved with my team in preparing several International and Regional Project Proposals. I have also worked with our dedicated Project Procurement Team to prepare the bid documents in Bangladesh.
  6. Supervising and Mentoring Colleagues: I have an excellent reputation for supervising and mentoring my colleagues in solving various problems with my innovative skills. Previously I was responsible for guiding the 'Park and Playground Team' from the design development and construction phase to completion. As the senior architect and Urban Designer, I also had to play a vital role in the studio, supervising my junior colleagues to finish the job perfectly.
  7.  Guidance and Best Practices in Healthy Street Design:
Throughout my career, I have designed 32 urban parks that cater to various age groups, children's playgrounds, and urban public and community spaces in different communities in Dhaka City. These integrated and inclusive urban interventions have helped a staggering 2.23 million people residing in the nine most significant communities in the Southern part of the city under Dhaka South Corporation (DSCC) and 1.14 million people in some critical neighbourhoods and communities under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to improve their community life. By providing better accessibility, walkability, cyclability, social cohesion, and community interactions, these parks have been pivotal in enhancing the quality of life for residents in these areas. While working on these projects, I have possessed a comprehensive understanding of guidance and best practices in healthy street design, advocating for a holistic approach that promotes the well-being of communities. Sustainability, equity, and inclusion are at the core of my design philosophy, and I am dedicated to creating environments that enhance the quality of life for all residents.
  8.  Strong Verbal and Written Communication Skills with Problem-Solving Capabilities:  Throughout my career, I have maintained strong verbal and written communication and interaction with technical and non-technical audiences such as community people, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders of public and private sectors and ensured bringing all the groups together under the same umbrella for better implementations and executions of our designs and ideas in a sustainable way. The end goal was to create livable communities that would benefit everyone, and I am glad to say that we were successful in achieving this goal. My problem-solving capabilities as an individual and group member, derived from acquired experience, have allowed me to overcome challenges and deliver exceptional results.
  9.  Creative Design Engagement Exercise for a Variety of Audiences including School Children:  As the coordinator of the Participatory Rapid Appraisal sessions in various schools in Dhaka City suitable for different age groups, including Children, my duty was to ensure that every voice was heard in the design of community open and green spaces. We leave no stone unturned in our mission to include community members, local government representatives, and stakeholders in the planning process through our creative community engagement exercise approach. Moreover, getting myself more involved in working with school children to assist them in learning 'Minecraft for Children' was a fantastic experience for me. With professional training and certification in the U.N.'s 'MINE CRAFT for the Children' program, I passionately advocate for community-based sustainable urban design. My role as an instructor and trainer for this exciting computer-based video game has allowed me to engage with kids from various communities, neighbourhoods, and schools in Dhaka City. I guided them in creating play spaces that reflect their unique personalities and interests. This work was gratifying, and an honour to be part of it.
  10. Strong Organisational Skills and Ability to Plan and Prioritise Own Workload: As an Urban Designer with approximately eight years of experience in the field, I have honed my organisational abilities to manage and oversee projects efficiently. My keen eye for detail allows me to break down complex tasks into manageable steps, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising design quality. My capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and effectively allocate resources has enabled me to lead successful projects, delivering exceptional results to stakeholders' satisfaction and prioritising my workload.
  11.  Demonstrate Openness, Inclusiveness, Sensitivity, and the Ability to Interact with All:  Throughout my career, I have demonstrated a genuine commitment to fostering openness, inclusiveness, and sensitivity in all aspects of my work. I understand that the built environment profoundly impacts individuals' lives, and it is essential to engage respectfully with all stakeholders to develop creative solutions that address their unique needs and preferences. By actively listening and valuing diverse perspectives, I create an inclusive environment where every voice is heard, contributing to the success and acceptance of urban design initiatives.
  12.  Inclusive Design and Healthy Street Design:
As an experienced Urban Designer, I have developed a strong passion for designing urban spaces that promote social equity, accessibility, and inclusivity. Throughout my career, I have witnessed the powerful impact of streets and public spaces on communities and individuals. By understanding different user groups' diverse needs and experiences, I strive to create environments that cater to everyone, fostering a sense of belonging and social cohesion.
Inclusive design lies at the heart of my design philosophy, and I am dedicated to breaking down barriers and ensuring that streets are accessible and welcoming to all, regardless of age, ability, or background. I was actively engaged with diverse communities during the design process, incorporating their input to create spaces that reflect their aspirations and culture. By involving stakeholders from various backgrounds, I have successfully designed streets that address each community's unique challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, my knowledge of best practices in healthy street design allows me to create environments that promote physical activity, sustainable transportation, and improved public health. I understand the importance of incorporating green infrastructure, pedestrian-friendly features, and multi-modal transportation options to create vibrant, liveable urban spaces.
  13. Cycle-Friendly City Movement and Community Green Movement: I took charge of promoting a cycling-friendly city movement in Dhaka. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, I was granted the opportunity to design a dedicated cycle lane on Parliament Avenue as part of a pilot project launched by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). This was a prime opportunity to impact the community and promote sustainable transportation options positively. Furthermore, I have also actively participated in the community green movement with the Bangladesh Environment Activist Organisation since 2014. Our primary objective was to raise awareness in the community about the importance of protecting green spaces and making them accessible and user-friendly for everyone.
  14. Serving the Rohingya Refugee Community:
During my career in urban design, I took the lead in designing several community spaces, shelters, and educational areas for the Rohingya Refugee People in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh. These spaces were crucial for women and children affected by the Civil War in Myanmar, and we prioritised community involvement in the design process. To ensure the success of these projects, I coordinated regular meetings and supervised the sites with the International Organisation for Migrants (IOM). It was a challenging experience, but we accomplished great work together, and I take pride in that.

In 2021, one of my urban design projects, 'Rehabilitation of Justice Shahabuddin Park', received the 'AIA International Merit Award' in Urban Design, where I worked as a team leader, coordinator, project Architect, and Urban Designer. This is one of the 32 urban open spaces, parks, and playgrounds I have designed for Dhaka City, the capital of Bangladesh. It is one of Bangladesh's historical urban designing projects where some SDGs have been met. Moreover, I was directly involved with the construction from the beginning to the completion.

Moreover, I have also worked as a part-time research assistant at Cardiff University's School of Geography and Planning. My role was to organise and analyse the data from the school children and make presentations to make them understand their contribution to the built environment they live in the community. Working as a research assistant has given me a clear idea of working in the U.K. environment and interacting with multicultural people, which will help me enhance my professional career in your organisation.
Recently, I have also attended the summer school launched by Cardiff University's School of Geography and Planning on Co-designing children-friendly cities. This has helped me gain the knowledge, expertise, toolkit, and ethical considerations required to design a community with children and youth.
As a highly dedicated and motivated professional, I deeply understand UK-based design and planning principles, legislation, policies, and strategies. I have taken inspiration from my working experience on community and urban green and public spaces and set my dissertation topic accordingly which was to rethink the urban community green spaces in Butetown, Cardiff, as a well-being hub which is on the linkage between urban green areas and the well-being of the community.
Finally, I am highly passionate and constantly seek new challenges and learning opportunities.
