About Liam Mitchell:

  • Procurement and Sourcing Specialist at Centrica
  • BA Hons Management (2:1)
  • RGU Short Course: Energy Transition Management
  • CIPS Level 4

I have gained a huge amount of experience in the entire procurement purchasing process and developed advanced sourcing skills within the energy industry. I have been part of huge projects within an industry leading organisation and ran the whole sourcing/tendering process. I have a keen interest in also undertaken Energy Tradition Management and have undertaken a short course to help improve my knowledge within an industry of increasing importance. I have various other experiences on work placements which has allowed me to develop my creativity and organisational skills.

Experience

Centrica PLC - Procurement Sourcing Specialist and Category Specialist:

  • As part of the sourcing team, I was responsible for tender exercises (RFI’s/RFP’s) and finalisation of contracts for several projects with high values. I led in analysing tender submissions and handled the awarding of suppliers for PSL’s in different areas of the business such as boiler spares, net zero labour and legal projects. .
  • After a department re-org , I moved into a category specialist role where I had to learn a new category (Boiler and Net Zero Labour) in depth. This requires me to develop a strategy to support stakeholders and allows me to add value and efficiency to the category as a whole.
  • Appointed as the designated SAP Ariba expert for my wider team - this system is used across the whole procurement teamand I assist colleagues (including managers) with any challenges they face on a regular basis. My skills in developing tenders on this system has helped colleagues across the department.
  • I am a mentor for new starts joining the procurement department which involves assisting them by teaching them the methods used at Centrica and giving demonstrations of the systems used by Centrica.
  • I have been an interviewer and assessor at assessment centres for procurement graduates.
  • Key Projects include:
  • NEST Project – UK Government Warmer Homes project, this is the second largest decarbonisation project in the UK with a contract value of £210 million over a period of 7 years. I was responsible for the whole Labour/Contractor tender process, which involved using my SAP Ariba expertise to run an RFP with nearly 100 contractors/suppliers. Meticulous attention to detail was required to analyse 140 submission documents. I successfully appointed and awarded the relevant suppliers to deal with the forecasted demand. I received recognition from the head of NEST for my work.
  • Centrica’s Legal Panel – project value of £21 million to put in place the legal panel for Centrica. This involved running the tender process including RFP, commercial discussions and contracting. This is a highly contentious area of the business and involved good stakeholder alignment to ensure the procurement process was followed. The legal panel consists of 13 Law Firms across the UK. It is used by all departments within Centrica where stakeholders require external legal advice.
  • Asbestos Recontracting – This is a very challenging area for the business as asbestos removal suppliers have been working with an unsuitable contract for years. I have developed a new rate card template which adds transparency to suppliers pricing. I also completed a tender to ensure the business receives the most competitive rates, as well as the best service. I am now in the process of developing a contract with measurable KPI’s and a robust scope to minimise risk in this area. I have received great feedback from senior management who recognise the complexity of this area.
  • Solar and Battery Pilot 2025 – Part of the team rolling out our first Solar and Battery installation trial to test the market. My role involved analysing installers, comparing costs for purchasing the materials ourselves vs outsourcing to a contractor and then finally onboarding and contracting with a competent Contractor. Successful delivery of the pilot will be massive for British Gas/Centrica in rolling out solar in the years to come. I have now moved on to progressing the next stage of rolling out Solar and Battery installs nationally, this includes building a tender to realise capacity to meet demand across the country and ensure the business is receiving competitive rates from a network of Solar and Battery installers.

GFI Enterprises - Procurement Specialist and Sales Office Manager

  • Promoted to Sales Office Manager, where I delegated tasks and trained colleagues, solving and preventing any issues and assisted with quote analysis.
  • Regularly dealt with large project type RFQ’s, for example sourcing urgent and high-pressured turnaround and shutdown requirements where I managed the whole project from sourcing, order expediting and delivery.
  • Approached and communicated with suppliers and clients daily, building relationships with people and companies based in countries all over the world. This helped with negotiating the best price and terms of business with suppliers.
  • Analysed reports and databases daily which assisted with maximising profits. This also allowed me to report cost savings with senior management at monthly meetings and suggest improvements to the procurement process.
  • Quickly gained advanced skills in using the ERP system ManSys (International Trade Software System).
  • Developed  knowledge in understanding engineering specifications through analysing detailed product specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills, particularly when ensuring no details are missed when analysing vendors’ quotes, and thus minimising risk in a high pressure and fast paced environment.
  • Responsible for the full procurement process, from creating RFQ’s through to order processing and shipment for some of the world’s largest oil and gas companies.
