About Maria José Alarcon:

Maria is a qualified lawyer in NY, Spain and Ecuador and has litigated before various courts in Ecuador in environmental cases, including the Constitutional Court. 

Maria focuses her practice in international arbitration and public international law having worked in several law firms and international organizations in Paris, London, Madrid, Hamburg, Abu Dhabi, Florida and Ecuador.

She has been a professor for international environmental law for the past 2 years. Maria worked for the Nicolas Institute of Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University and she is currently an Assistant Editor for Investment Arbitration and Environmental Law.

FAO Expert Consultant in international environmental law

Cases:

  • Defending a Latin American State in three investment arbitration concerning the metro project in the capital city - ICSID Arbitration.
  • Defending a Latin American State in the biggest copper mine investment arbitration. 5 billion USD. PCA - UNCITRAL Rules. Negotiation Stage and Investment Arbitration strategy. 
  • Defending a European State on an investment case under the Energy Charter Treaty on renewable energy production. PCA - UNCITRAL Rules. 
  • Defending Ukrainian individual before the European Court of Human Rights on article 6 and 7 violation. 

 

Education

Maria is a qualified lawyer in NY, Spain and Ecuador. 

Duke University School of Law - LLM in international law with emphasis in environmental law. 

Dual Masters of Law in Corporate Law and access to the Spanish Bar - Minor in EU Law - IE Business School. 

Universidad de Navarra - Bachelor of Laws with Global Law Diploma.
