About Maya Kamall:
I am a dedicated, passionate graduate looking to join the NHS
Experience
My tenure as a trained SHOUT volunteer provided me with a theoretical framework to understand and address the issues faced by individuals in crisis, which often mirror those encountered by the CAMHS population. Working under the supervision of clinical experts, I honed my skills in assessing risk and providing empathetic support to those in distress. Active listening and goal setting were central to my role, helping texters develop coping strategies and promoting a sense of calm. This experience reinforced my understanding of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model and its application in replacing unhelpful habits with more adaptive ways of thinking.
Additionally, my role as an Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapist gave me hands-on experience and specialized training in which I actively contributed to the progression of autistic children in academic, social, and emotional domains. Working collaboratively with clinical consultants, speech and language therapists, and parents, I gained valuable insights into the multifaceted challenges faced by children with diagnoses such as ADHD, Autism, and Fetal Alcohol syndrome as well as domestic challenges faced. The regular supervision in this role also allowed me to reflect on my practice and to develop professionally. My role extended beyond therapy sessions to include risk assessments, behavior plans, and effective communication with various stakeholders.
Assessing and addressing the emotional and mental health needs of these children was paramount in ensuring their well-being. I believe in fostering children's long-term success by equipping them with emotional management skills. Gradual exposure to minor stressors in a supportive setting, aligned with cognitive-behavioral techniques, helps build resilience. Creating a safe, nurturing environment during these exposures helps children develop emotional strength and resilience, positively impacting their future well-being. Adapting communication methods to accommodate children who are non-verbal was also a crucial aspect of being an effective therapist. Using alternative communication resources like PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), communication apps, and choice boards was incredibly beneficial in facilitating meaningful interactions and supporting their development. Ultimately, flexibility is vital when dealing with children who exhibit challenging behaviors, as each child is unique. Involving parents and maintaining consistency is crucial. Regular communication and assessments, with adjustments made based on the child's needs, aided in reducing challenging behavior.
The children in the unit came from diverse backgrounds, often first-generation immigrants. In some cases, because of different cultural backgrounds, parents showed feelings of shame or embarrassment regarding their children's disabilities, therefore being agile, caring, and showing cultural sensitivity in our approach when talking with parents was important. I strongly believe all parents should be made to feel comfortable and not receive judgement and their children should always have access to education or expert help. These experiences underscored the importance of cultural sensitivity and empathetic, non-judgmental communication with parents.
Education
I have a degree from Coventry University. I was able to attain a 2:1 in BSc Psychology. I have received training in Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy aiding autistic children in the progression of their academic, social and emotional goals. I have also received training in Team Teach and am very keen and motivated to train and become a Childrens Wellbeing Practitioner.
