Michael Horrell
Pharmaceutical / Bio-tech
About Michael Horrell:
An enthusiastic and detail-orientated computational scientist proficient in a versatile skill base including data analysis, Python scripting, bioinformatics, workflow development, and protein modelling. With exceptional problem-solving skills and experience in both academic and business sectors, I am a motivated professional looking to work with teams using computational methods and large data sets to address complex questions and improve processes.
Bioinformatics: My Master’s, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral work in Computational Biochemistry used various in silico bioinformatics techniques to investigate the structure, dynamics, and interactions of membrane proteins. I started by investigating small molecule ligand binding to GPCRs including identification of novel drug sites. I then developed a Python automated pipeline for the simulation and systematic analysis of proteins in a bilayer-like environment. This has given me extensive experience with analysis of large datasets, as well as molecular modelling and visualisation. I have also worked closely with colleagues using AlphaFold structures, and collaborated on functional and mutagenic studies on GPCRs (research which was published in the journal Nature).
Computing: I use both Linux and Windows-based systems on a daily basis, and have extensive knowledge of Python programming and Bash scripting, in addition to database experience and familiarity with version control. I have used a variety of HPC clusters, including in a system admin role helping with maintenance and support. I am continuously working to develop my programming and systems administration skills, most recently through the initialisation of Linux servers, improving my understanding of virtual machines and Docker containers. I have also undertaken several projects exploring machine learning and the use of large language models. I have assisted with the development of a website for a new business which deals with online ordering and payment, and I am currently working on the migration to a NAS system for another local business.
Business: In my current management role I have many responsibilities, giving me a versatile and adaptable skill base. I am in charge of all the IT systems used by the business, including setup, maintenance and troubleshooting of front-of-house payment portals, local networks, and behind-the-scenes business computing hardware and software. I can quickly learn to use new systems and teach others to use them as necessary, along with carrying out performance checks and improving systems based on user feedback. In addition, I analyse the large data sets generated from the point of sales software to give information on best-selling items and informed suggestions about possible changes to the available products and the pricing structure. I manage the business accounts, including balancing payments in with purchasing costs and organising the payroll to ensure that employees are paid correctly in a timely manner. I also work on occasion serving customers and using my excellent communication and interpersonal skills to ensure that they have the best possible experience.
