About Nathan Wren:
PERSONAL PROFILE
I am drawn towards engineering because I have a strong background in science and maths. I always enjoy a hands-on approach to tasks and have a strong attention to detail. I am hardworking. When given a task I will always complete it to the best of my ability. I am a very good team player and I would describe myself as a leader. I have very good communication skills and I love overcoming problems. I also have a strong tendency to help people if needed. I have a keen interest in building a career in engineering.
SKILLS AND INTERESTS
Communication: When swim coaching I need to communicate to make sure swimmers understand what they are doing and if help is needed. I am able to tell them how to improve their technique. In lifeguarding communication skills are essential as I use it to help prevent harm or injury happening to any other pool users.
Computer Skills: I enjoy gaming and have built my own PC after researching and purchasing components. In GCSE Computer Science I studied a lot about how computers work, different types of storage and many kinds of viruses. I also learnt about HTML and Python. I was a top performer in my class and therefore able to help and advise others around me.
Safety in the workplace: In BTEC Construction I learnt how to work with tools and how to use them correctly. I was taught about safety and how to remain safe in the workplace. I learnt how to plan for a job and to ensure that the job is done at a high quality.
Teamwork: In lifeguarding, teamwork is very important. One example being the conduction of pool parties with an inflatable obstacle course. Teamwork is needed to be able to determine how many people are on the inflatable at a given time, how many people are in each pool and whether more supervision is needed in other areas of the pool. It can be stressful but teamwork makes it more manageable.
Car Mechanics: Recently I have been helping a friend of mine to rebuild his car. At present, this has involved a service and changing the brake pads/calipers. I have also done some work on a car with my dad including servicing and changing a clutch.
Commitment/Motivation: I was a competitive swimmer with success at Welsh Nationals. This involved significant training for 2 hours both before and after school up to 6 days a week. I still enjoy swimming 2-3 times a week.
Experience
My work life at the moment consists of being a part time life guard, I have been doing this for the last 2 years along side my A-Levels. To become a life guard you must have obtained the National Pool Life guarding Qualification, which has taught many different skills such as team work and good communication. Along side this job I have also volunteered to coach at the local swimming club helping the young swimmers to become the best swimmers they can be and help them towards the next step.
