About Shamiso Matarutse:

COVERING LETTER

My present role as a  Carer has enhanced my competence and awareness of relational, physical, and procedural practices within health care industry. Through working within this field,I am learning to practice within a well-defined practice framework that will be able to support me to develop high-quality practice by providing clear expectations and a framework within which a consistent approach can be applied.

The skills I gained during my work experience in the care work industry has enhanced my ability to be effective in problem-solving and decision-making. In addition, I am able to prioritise workload using my own initiative and working with minimal supervision. This improved my time management skills as I was able to juggle a variety of workloads, using time efficiently to meet critical deadlines. The ability to manage time effectively demonstrated my professionalism, ability to multitask, and availability to contribute to the team whilst meeting the objectives set out by organisation

My work have given me the opportunity to gain and develop skills such as interpersonal relationships, assessment, and care planning, and delivering patient interventions. Additionally, I developed excellent written and verbal communication skills. For example, building rapport with patients enabled me to understand the patient inside and outside the world. Furthermore, this created an opportunity to safeguard the public and the patient by assessing the possible risk associated with the service users.

It  has enhanced my competence and awareness of relational, physical, and procedural security routines practiced in adult social care. I, therefore, participate in assessing and managing risk as necessary to ensure that service users are protected from serious harm caused by themselves or others, by engaging in reflective practice and evidence-based decision-making. In this work, I am repeatedly exposed to aggressive behaviour including verbal and physical abuse which I managed to de-escalate using, for example, the talk down technique. In addition, I manage to regulate my own emotions by remaining calm, being assertive and active listening. Furthermore, I allow the service users to explain the reason for aggression and offered an alternative way to solve the problem.

Furthermore, I have developed courage and confidence in receiving or providing honest constructive feedback, which enabled me to reflect on my practice. In addition, I gained and developed a skill in referring or signposting patients to other services. This enabled a holistic approach and maintaining successful working relationships with both internal and external colleagues.

I am looking forward to securing a position as a Carer where I can transfer and develop my current skills further. I believe I will be an asset and bring improvements to the team. My placements and employment have made me realise that I am flexible and can adapt to different environments. In addition, the feedback I have had from colleagues, that I am calm and approachable, which are positive characters required in adult services. Therefore, I will be able to use all these skills.
